Best cheap and easy hot pudding to serve a lot of people

It's for a church lunch - guests are needy, not to raise money iyswim. We'll probably only charge £2 per head for 3 courses.

I'm in charge of soup (Delia's slow roast vegetable) and pudding. I want to do something hot with custard. I need something that can be made in advance and heated on the day and which will be quick and easy to serve (often my delicious looking puds look a bit of a mess by the time I get them out of the baking dish)

We're expecting around 35 people.

Any ideas?

Huge apple crumble? Can be baked in a shallow large tray

EightiesChick · 04/02/2012 19:41

Yep crumble of some kind. No need for it to look neat and delicate then. Great crumble weather too.

Steamed syrup pudding?

joanofarchitrave · 04/02/2012 19:41

My view - apple pie, but I'm not sure it fits the serving requirement.

Oh, yes!! Sponge flan with peach slices. You can get ready sponge flans from the supermarket, value peach slices are really nice, you could mix in some frozen/tinned and drained raspberries for a stronger flavour? Super easy to combine and serve.

Everyone loves a crumble!

BlastOff · 04/02/2012 19:42

Crumble every time. Delia has fool proof crumble topping. Cheap as chip!

Crumble or baked rice pudding. R

Spotted dick? I had this for the first time at a similar event recently, and I was amazed at how easy, cheap and tasty it was.

Apple crumble's got to be good.

How long will you have access to the ovens to re-heat it? I remember that kind of event needing an awful lot of negotiation over who had what cooking facilities for how long. Do you need to cook in lots of small dishes that will re-heat faster?

Syrup sponge pudding with dates?

Apple pie? Might re-heat faster than the sponge, and easy to serve with a cake slice.

Apple charlotte? (Uses up left over bread, but might not be easy to serve)

What about a nice rice pudding?

Taffeta · 04/02/2012 19:49

I'd do a sponge pudding with custard

eg treacle or pear

cyb · 04/02/2012 19:49

I like to bung a bit of mincemeat in my apple crumbles for extra fruitiness

Bread and butter pudding with custard?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/02/2012 19:52

Baked plums with rice pudding - yummy.

Or yes to crumble.

Or Eve's Pudding.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/02/2012 19:53

Or yes to b&b pudding - in fact, scrap all the other ideas and make that! :)

seeker · 04/02/2012 20:10

My brother makes the most amazing bread and butter pudding with hot cross buns. And the buns are on special offer in Morrisons at the moment.

RightUpMyRue · 04/02/2012 20:14

B+B pudding made with hot cross buns?! That sounds amazing.

GlitterKitty · 04/02/2012 20:15

bibbitybobbityhat · 04/02/2012 20:26

I'm going to make apple crumble with mincemeat for pudding after Sunday dinner tomorrow, thanks to this thread. Will go well after roast pork.

GlitterKitty · 04/02/2012 20:27

I was making apple pie for after roast beef, but not think I may make apple & mincemeat strudel instead... Grin
