Me too Starlover! I throw less away if I don't meal plan. I think it's more about the shopping than the cooking though. I don't buy loads of things at random and then throw them away because they don't get used. I buy what I'm going to eat.

nutcracker · 17/01/2006 11:58

I have tried to meal plan but find I don't want to eat what i've planned on a particular day.

starlover · 17/01/2006 11:59

ditto! and i think it helps that i shop online... if i go into the supermarket i see all kinds of things i'd like and then never end up eating! lol

I think it's the free spirit in me putting up a fight against the inevitable domestic goddessness that has overtaken my life since dd's arrival!

I think of a few meals while I'm going round the supermarket. When I get home I write a list of the use by dates of vital ingredients, and form a daily meal plan from that.

That said, we always have 10 or so chicken fillets in the freezer, and lots of jars of sauces, so if all else fails and I can't be bothered to go shopping, we can just have a curry or something.

If you don't get in until nearly 6 3 nights a week and have 2 young children to feed and get to bed for 7.30 you have to plan.

I don't have one of those fixed rotating plans like yg and mars but I plan for the week ahead. If something unexpected crops up then the planned meal gets pushed over into the next week.

If you don't plan just buy random foods it limits what you can make.

janinlondon · 17/01/2006 13:12

Whenever I try to meal plan (two of us both working) I find that someone is working late/going to friend's house for supper/has to go out by 7pm/other assorted excuses. So I don't do it. Life is too unpredictable!

rummum · 17/01/2006 13:12

I used to have what ever fell out of the freezer when I opened the door...

Now I meal plan life is soooo much easier... and I am supprisingly calmer

We're having spag bol tonight... I looked at the meal plan this morning [stuck on fridge] and thought "I must defrost that" ..... Vola

I used to do random shops, especially for bread and milk... but I ended up spending a fortune with my ohhhh that looks nice... I'll have some of that.... now, we have our milk delivered (yes I know its more expencive but believe me its cheaper in the long run) and Hubby gets some bread once a week on the way home.
