you have to put a match (unlit....) between your teeth and bite hard on it

works for me

even though it looks weird

MistleToo · 29/11/2005 13:15

Wear swimming goggles !

My DH swears that wearing his contacts make it lesspainful than when he's wearing his specs.

Or put 'em in a food processor, that's what I do.

oliveoil · 29/11/2005 13:16

pout them in the freezer first

oliveoil · 29/11/2005 13:16

put!

MistleToo · 29/11/2005 13:17

ooh - good point NDP - dh says it never bothers him and he

WEARS CONTACTS!!!!

Close your eyes.
Oh no, bad idea I guess!

MistleToo · 29/11/2005 13:18

Ha, ha! I have actually tried that!

food processor means too much messing about and washing up - I'm a lazy moo!

Light a candle next to the onions

Mind you don't get the smoke in your eyes though...

kikidee · 29/11/2005 13:22

Try chewing a piece of gum when you're chopping. My DH suggested it and I was highly sceptical but it does make a difference. Mainly, I try and do them while still wearing contact lenses.

Niddlynono · 29/11/2005 13:23

Whistle while you cut them.

It doesn't work without fail but I swear it has worked for me!!

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 29/11/2005 13:24

Is it true that if you hold your nose you can bite into an onion without tasting it?

gingerbear · 29/11/2005 13:32

I never cried doing onions when I wore contacts. Now I am lasered I either peel them under water or leave on the root bit until the very end and chop at arms length.

FrenchKissUnderMistletoeGirl · 29/11/2005 13:36

MistleToo it's true!!!

JonesTheSteam · 29/11/2005 13:37

It's true - if I'm wearing my contact lenses while I'm chopping onions, it doesn't affect me at all. A very different story when I'm wearing my glasses!!!

My gran always says you should run your hand under a cold tap to stop your eyes watering - never works for me!!!!!!!

Micku5 · 29/11/2005 13:44

Leave the roots on and after you cut it in half, leave the onion in a small bowl of water for a few minutes. HTH

MistleToo · 29/11/2005 14:14

does anyone know why it's so painful?

thanks for the tips btw

put a piece of bread in your mouth over the top teeth (and keep your mouth shut) - like a mouth guard. Don't swallow it afterwards as it'll be oniony!

chicagomum · 29/11/2005 14:19

I so sympathise mistletoo, mine are so bad I even cry when cutting leeks

Mytwopenceworth · 29/11/2005 14:20

suck a cold teaspoon.

hornbag · 29/11/2005 14:46

Chicagomum -I had that with leeks for the first time the other day -it was worse than the onions!

DP swears by leaving the root end intact with onions

Gobbledigook · 29/11/2005 14:47

Breathe through your mouth and not your nose.

sunchowder · 29/11/2005 14:49

I store mine in the fridge and don't have any problems, I think the chill helps to keep the crying air closer to the chopping board.

chicagomum · 29/11/2005 14:51

My advice is either a diving mask and snorkel or as i do get dh to do them

fifilala · 29/11/2005 15:28

Asda do bags of ready chopped onions!!!!
