buy the bags of frozen already chopped ones, they are fantastic, wonderful, can't express how great they are, you can just pour them out into whatever you are cooking.

I cry just being in the same room as someone chopping onions, they used to seriously put me off cooking I hated doing it so much.

Sticking out your tongue while you cut them works, no idea why.
