Most of the lapsed Veggies I know, either "cracked" on one of the following, the smell of a bacon sandwich, of the smell of the turkey cooking all day.

So come on..............tell all

gingerbear · 16/11/2005 19:55

was fed up of eating feckin cheese salads or omelettes when dining out.
Tis slightly improved these days, but still hard to eat out on truely scrummy veggie nosh anywhere but in the cities.

gingerbear · 16/11/2005 19:57

If there is a decent veggie option, I still prefer it to chicken or fish though.
Still not eating lamb/beef/pork cos I have always hated the taste.

donnie · 16/11/2005 19:58

I was a strict vegetarian for several years - about 10 - but in my late 20s my health wasn't so good and I was advised by a Chinese herbal doctor to eat a little meat. So I did, reluctantly - and I must say I felt so much better on it. We arenn't big meat eaters by any means but I do like a bit now and again. I only buy organic though.
Secretly, I do wish I was still a veggie though as I can see a great many reasons, both health and ethical, for not eating meat.

i was vegetarian from the age of 6 to 22 - lived on a farm and hated the thought of our lambs going to market or suddenly not being able to find Fred the cockerel and then having chicken for sunday dinner I was 23 when i had the first flush of re-kindled meat love over a bacon sandwich in a motorway service station! That was 7 yrs ago and now i eat organic chicken and fish too. saying that we also eat lots of "veggie" food too, so im not a total lost cause.....

was veggie for 8 yrs - then started secret chicken sarnies at lunchtime. The crunch came when my dad taunted me with a bit of roast beef on his fork at Sunday dinner, and I leant over and scoffed it ! I've never seen him so shocked

mancmum · 16/11/2005 20:09

I cracked on a bacon sandwich after years of not giving in to hangover fueled urges... it was the day before I went to South AMerica for a year and I figured (rightly) that I would die if I lived on the veggie options and to be honest too to carnivore life with avengance... nevewr looked back and after 10 years of veggie-ism, now love meat...

NannyL · 16/11/2005 20:11

i was veggy for 7 years...

was veggy simply because i couldnt bear animals being badly treated in any way at all....

the family who i nannied for were from a butchers family so they were adament they would persude me to eat meat... i was as adament that they wouldnt...

anyway they bought another property (farm) in the middle of nowhere in wales and we spent a lot of time there on holidays / long weekends etc...

the next door farmer sued to borrow 'our' fields for his dry dairy cows, and we often went up there to watch the milkin, and became very friendly etc.

Anyway in exchange for the fields he used to give them his own beef and pork that he bred and butchered himself, (all the correct licenses etc)

one day we had no veggy stuff (due to frezer breaking) and they were having a joint of pork from a pig who I had personally met and knew that this pig had had the best life possible for a pig...
as a result i ate some (Yumm!)

that was the start.... i then progressed to the pork from our local EXTREAMLY good farm shop (where i woudl drive past the 'happy' pigs) and then to either nice farm shop meat (where i was reassured abou the animals) or orgnaic meat from supermarkets.

Im VERY strict about chicken, it HAS to be organic and id NEVER eat a McDonalds burger or similar.... so now i eat 'proper' good quality (almost always) organic meat.

I feel that that is best for the animals, and i accept that without humans eating the animals we arnt going to have lovely sheep in the country side, and IMO that would spoil the country side some what.

Therefor i eat nicely treated that i trust. If in doubt i'll have a veggy option.

pussycatmomma · 16/11/2005 20:15

goodness nanny - wish i could be as thoroughly good and kind as yourself! you are just as sweet as Barbara in The Good Life! ((((hugs to you)))))

lucycinco · 16/11/2005 20:21

I was a veggie for 17 years before going to Spain alot and eventually moving here and I got fed up with eating tortilla and trying to explain that ham was meat. Every time i ordered something veggie it had ham or back pudding in it. I started to eat fish and then thought i mayswell eat meat, i believe it had become habit rather than principal. i still dont eat much meat only rubbish like bacon and sausages, I dont really like it but i love fish and seafood. I must admit to missing Donner kebabs

Nightynight · 16/11/2005 20:44

I didnt eat much meat when I was younger, but the reason I went back to meat was the same every time - I just didnt feel well on a totally vegan diet (was also having to avoid cows milk products).
Life's too short and disorganised to count out mushrooms and pulses and make a success of veganism!

After 16 years I started dreaming about mixed grills, but the first meat I ate was chicken.

Now I cannot get enough meat. IT IS DELICIOUS!!!!

MrsSpoon · 16/11/2005 21:07

Was only veggie for six months but it was a roast chicken that cracked me and it was gorgeous, soooo tasty after no meat for six months.

What also bugged me was that people would say things like I wanted to invite you round for dinner but didn't because I didn't know what to give you to eat as you are veggie. Now I eat almost everything but don't eat loads of meat and tend to veer more towards poultry and fish.

expatinscotland · 16/11/2005 21:08

I cracked when I moved to Scotland nearly 4 years ago. Before that, I'd be vegetarian for about 8 years.

pussycatmomma · 16/11/2005 21:14

have you ever eaten haggis , expat? it seems so gruesome, esp to a former vegetarian!

mandymac · 16/11/2005 21:17

In Brazil - at a wedding, we were served the most amazing rare steak. My mouth is watering now just thinking about it and this was about 12 years ago. .

Blu · 16/11/2005 21:19

Working away from home for a month in a freezing cold snowy spell in Halifax in the 1980's.

Vegetarian food in affordable restaurants in Halifax in the 80's? Unknown. Let alone comforting, nice, enjoyable vegetarian food.

It was the chicken curry what dunnit, yer 'onner!

expatinscotland · 16/11/2005 21:23

No way! I have never eaten haggis - well, I've eaten the vegetarian variety .

We only eat free range/organic meats as well.

Tortington · 16/11/2005 22:15

veggie for 3 years after meeting someone in the ALF at uni,

cracked whilst mightily pissed in france as dh was cooking lardons for supper.

Cabe · 16/11/2005 22:51

Hi - sorry for crashing into your thread.
I was veggie for 13 years... First started eating fish as I suddenly began to lose weight for no reason but the meaty cave-in happened in an attempt to get my then dp to eat something - anything!!!

He was alcoholic and didn't eat from one day to the next - I cooked a phesant (poor little bugger)roasts and all and he couldn't resist... Unfortunately his new eating habit didn't last as long as his drinking habit - my new taste for meat did last - but the relationship didn't!!

Frieda · 16/11/2005 23:04

I was a veggie for about 6 years, and valiently held off dp's attempt to get me to eat meat until DS was on the way, and he insisted that the fruit of his loins needed meat. I intended to go back to my veggie ways after DS was born, but somehow have never got round to it .
