Did Friendly's diners close a few years ago? I love a good diner, but can tolerate a Dennys. Me, and all the elderly people drinking coffee with entrees!

Thanks Expat.
Firmly on the menu for next week.
I'll have to miss out the jalapenos in the mix, but will add to my food after.
DD doesn't do anything more spicy than not spicyHmm

I've made sloppy Joes before, we liked them, but I'll give your recipe a try as it's different.
The one I tried was a bit more spag bol like.

Oh, and do keep going, I love to try new things!

Anyone reading who likes grits, or wants to try them, should also have a look at congee.
It's a savoury rice porridge.

OTTMummA · 15/09/2010 21:43

oh, didn't know that the biscuits were savoury :S
I smothered mine in grape jelly at McDs in NY last year!
it was nice though, do we get grape jelly/jam here?

mathanxiety · 15/09/2010 22:50

I make American baking powder biscuits at home and the DCs have them with butter and honey. I always have marmite on mine Smile

seaturtle · 15/09/2010 23:01

Expat- I love that mushroom and green bean dish. Had friends from Louisiana a few years ago who gave me the recipe. And jambalaya.

Macaroni cheese in packets can be found in UK supermarkets. Don't think of it as particularly American. I'm waiting for Hamburger Helper to come over here. Even remember the song from the commercial after all these years! My mother refused to cook it but my half-American relatives cooked it often.

Christmas sauce sounds really nice for burritos!

Why dont we get grape "jelly" (jam) here I wonder? I really like the flavour of it.

PavlovtheCat · 16/09/2010 19:26

no it wasn't taco bell {blerugh}, it did specifically burritos, of various kinds. I might go and google it.

Christmas sauce is just the best ever. When we visit family in New Mexico we go to a fab little mexican place for breakfast, and I always have this. its absolutely bloody enormous though!

PavlovtheCat · 16/09/2010 19:28

OMFG, I took that link, for the photo, AND IT IS THE SAME PLACE!

the food is just awesome.

mathanxiety · 16/09/2010 20:52

If you can lay your hands on some concord grapes you could probably make some grape jelly.

badgermonkey · 16/09/2010 21:05

We went to the US/Canada for a month in the summer and the food you got out was much better than you get here, in general, even fast food. Supermarket food is not as good, though.

We got tasty food at airports, even (now in a reverie remembering the soft pretzel I had which I thought was speckled with sesame seeds but it was fuck-off big grains of salt, omg, so delicious).

Rockbird · 16/09/2010 21:12

What in the name of buggery is a zucchini weenie?? It sounds like a bloke with cock problems :o

First time I went to NY as a naive traveller we headed for MacDs as it was English food (geddit?) and therefore familiar. Uh oh, big mistake to have the breakfast. No idea what it was but it wasn't a sausage egg mcmuffin with a hash brown. Was scones ffs!

However, a proper American diner breakfast is like nothing else. Bloody lovely.

PavlovtheCat · 16/09/2010 21:16

Rubios - thats the mexican fast food place, in California was where I ate there.

Baja Fresh for fast Mexican food if you're in the West. It is the place to go. Mmmm.
