Pretzel M&Ms. Oh, man!

Or just pretzels off a stand in the mall.

I love pretzels.

Expat we need some of your authentic recipes, I love to try new dishes and would give them a go.
I want to try an American casserole and if the biscuits and gravy are anything to go by, it'll be delicious.
No vegetables set in jelly though please. What is that all about?Grin

expatinscotland · 15/09/2010 17:56

'No vegetables set in jelly though please. What is that all about?'

Haven't heard of anyone doing this since the 1970s, tbh.

I'll dig some recipes up later tonight.

The lasagne doesn't have bechamel sauce in it there. It's all tomato-based.

I use up leftover chicken in a Mexican rice casserole.

I can't take cheese, I don't tolerate lactose very well, so any casserole or dish I make doesn't have it in there or has very little.

mathanxiety · 15/09/2010 17:58

Smile Enjoy.

muggglewump · 15/09/2010 18:24

Mexican rice casserole sounds good.
I want to try one of the traditional and disgusting sounding casseroles.
Is it the green bean one that's the Thanksgiving dish?

I thought biscuits and gravy sounded disgusting until I made it, and it'll be a staple dinner in this house now so I want to be swayed by casserole too.

For years I've been saying I'll try a Thanksgiving dinner for DD and I, because it's around the time of my birthday, and I love trying new recipes, and cooking, oh, and eating!

manthanxiety
Yep, that's what I had in mind and no, just no.
Who in the name of arse eats that?

I'm tempted to find the chicken in a can link now.Grin

ValiumSingleton · 15/09/2010 18:26

What is grits while we're at it?!

Blu · 15/09/2010 18:32

The American people eat balls of macaroni cheese deep fried in breadcrumbs?

And it isn't post-ironic, like deep fried Mars bars, or anything?

muggglewump · 15/09/2010 18:41

The Scots eat macaroni pies.

Not so different really, though I've tried neither, they don't appeal to me and macaroni cheese is DD's only never food.

I do love a haggis supper on occasion though.

ValiumSingleton
I really fancy trying grits.

I believe it's a sort of porridge, but savoury.

Oh, that green bean one is easy.

It's just green beans, a tin or two of cream of mushroom soup. Bake for about 20 mins. at 180. Then sprinkle crispy salad onions over the top and put it back in the over until the salad onions go a bit browner.

Job done!

mathanxiety · 15/09/2010 18:49

Grits is (are?) little chips of grains of corn with the bran processed off, cooked a bit like watery polenta.

muggglewump · 15/09/2010 19:21

Mushroom soup?
DD won't eat mushrooms.
I love them, but not so much in a tin!

Is there any from scratch recipe for similar, without the mushrooms, or with them in but big bits so DD can pick them out?

Or, an entirely different traditional casserole, perhaps that one isn't for us!

I might do that for my birthday present to myself this year-finally cook us a Thanksgiving meal!

I like polenta. It needs a lot of parmesan, but it's good.
If grits is like that then I'd enjoy it

PavlovtheCat · 15/09/2010 19:36

breakfast burritos with christmas sauce. Mmmmmmmm.

Waffles, bacon, fried eggs, maple syrup. Mmmmmmmmm.

ValiumSingleton · 15/09/2010 20:10

Grits sound(s) ! quite tough.

muggglewump · 15/09/2010 20:13

What's Christmas sauce?

unclefluffy · 15/09/2010 20:19

Oh my god - breakfast burritos! Waahh!

expatinscotland · 15/09/2010 20:21

cream of mushroom soup. you can get it anywhere here. it's easy enough to fish out the 'shrooms.

Mexican Chicken and Rice Casserole

1 tblsp vegetable oil
1 onion, chopped
1 tblsp chilli powder
1 tblsp ground cumin
1 cup uncooked white long grain rice
2 cups chicken broth
1 tin chopped tom
1 tin red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 cup sweetcorn (I use frozen)
some chopped jalepenos, however many you fancy
some chicken - I used enough lefotver roasted chicken for 4 people+one little one

Preheat oven to 180C. Warm oil in a casserole and saute onion until softened. Add chilli powder and cumin and stir for a minute or so. Add rice and stir another minute or two. Stir in a cup of water plus broth, tomatoes, beans, corn, jalepenos and chicken. Season with salt and pepper and bring to the boil. Cover and bake till rice is tender, about 25-30 mins.

Remove from oven and let stand about 5 minutes.

Fluff with a fork, taste and adjust seasoning. Mmmmm.

I'd love to go along, but no one to watch the kids, sadly. Or place to stay. Or money that time of year.

expatinscotland · 15/09/2010 20:41

Sloppy Joes

1.5lbs. lean minced beef
1 cup of tomato passata (I use BBQ sauce instead)
1/3 cup ketchup
2 tblsps white wine vinegar
1 tblsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tsp sugar

Brown mince (I put in a grated onion and two grated peppers as well). Stire in passata or BBQ sauce, ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and sugar. Simmer on medium-low heat for 10 mins.

Spoon onto rolls and serve with gherkins, coleslaw and baked beans.

PavlovtheCat · 15/09/2010 20:48

Christmas sauce is hot chili sauce (red) and mild chili (green) sauce poured all over the breakfast burritos. bloody lovely.

In fact so lovely we might have them at the weekend!

All those americans on here, what is the name of the mexican fast food joint? didn't see it east coast, only west coast. been racking my brains for a while, since we discussed this with friends a while ago. I loved the place [blush[

expatinscotland · 15/09/2010 20:50

Was it Taco Bell? Taco Cabana?
