If you could only ever use two condiments for the rest of your life, what would they be?

I'm including sauces, ketchups and relishes as condiments.

I think I'd just stick with salt and pepper - DS1 would have tomato ketchup and extra tomato ketchup. But I don't know that I could live without Dijon Mustard - it's a tough one. And horseradish - could I really go the rest of my life without horseradish sauce in exchange for pepper? I do love a good condiment :o.

Black pepper, and english mustard......or maybe HP sauce.

autodidact · 10/08/2010 19:53

Encona and HP Sauce (unless you are not allowed to use salt and papper in cooking in which case would have to weep long and loud and choose them)

autodidact · 10/08/2010 19:54

reggae reggae ketchup sounds like it could be yum

TheMoonOnAStick · 10/08/2010 19:57

English mustard is no.1 no question (gotta be English though!)

After that I'm wavering between Tommy sauce, mayonnaise and salad cream.

autodidact · 10/08/2010 19:59

What is Tommy sauce, please, the m on a s?

Goober · 10/08/2010 20:02

Colemans Tangy tomato relish
and
Heinz salad cream.

TheMoonOnAStick · 10/08/2010 20:03

Sorry! It's what we call good old tomato sauce chez MoonOnaStick; nothing terribly exotic I'm afraid.

thefirstmrsDeVere · 10/08/2010 20:04

West Indian Every Day Seasoning.

I use it in everything. Its brilliant.

And

Ice cream, can I have ice cream?

Its a condiment isnt it? I does improve the taste of just about everything

Grin
autodidact · 10/08/2010 20:05

Doh! It's tomato ketchup, right?

autodidact · 10/08/2010 20:06

Sorry- x posts. It suddenly dawned on me. Sorry for slowness on my part. Thought it was an exciting new sauce I hadn't tried!

PaulineCampbellJones · 10/08/2010 20:09

Salt and soured cream

TheMoonOnAStick · 10/08/2010 20:10

Lol! Dh calls tartare sauce 'cheerio sauce' as in ta-ta(cheerio/goodbye). Oh how we laugh - I've only been listening to that joke for 20 yrs now. He thinks it's funny though..bless him.

Good to see salad cream mentioned. I always feel salad creamis terribly overlooked these days in favour of mayonnaise.

I'm learning some interesting new ones from this too. The ones you see in the shops but worry about taking a chance thinking 'will I like it or will it lurk for months in the cupboard unloved??'

CoupleofKooks · 10/08/2010 20:13

totally mayonnaise - there is hardly anything that isn't improved by a little (or a lot of) mayonnaise
for my second choice, probably soy sauce

TheMoonOnAStick · 10/08/2010 20:18

What I do like about mayonnaise is that is can turn into other interesting things if required.

Mix some mild curry powder or some roasted garlic and it changes into a yummier version of itself.

Hassled · 10/08/2010 20:24

The egginess of mayonnaise always puts me off a bit - am very strange about eggs.

Lots of good suggestions here - I think I need to try West Indian Everyday Seasoning. Is it like Jamaican Jerk? I love that.

yum to mayonnaise and salad cream. Love lime pickle, piccalilli, mustards of many types, horseradish, tobasco too. Partner is addicted to Lowry's seasoning salt. Condiments are mighty fine... You are a v mean woman trying to restrict us to two, Hassled!

thefirstmrsDeVere · 10/08/2010 20:32

Not quite Hassled. But you could use it to make jerk seasoning. Its very versatile. I use it in pasta sauce, marinades, stews etc. It comes in huge tubs so is much cheaper than the specific type carribean 'style' seasoning.

Most of the big supermarkets do it in their 'ethnic foods' aisle. Most larger Asian/Indian shops do it.

Hassled · 10/08/2010 21:11

I will keep a look out :)

ketchup and pepper.
Def ketchup, though! I love it!

MrFibble · 10/08/2010 21:27

coarse black pepper
balsamic vinegar

MassiveBumperlicious · 10/08/2010 21:36

Tomato ketchup and soy sauce, oh I can always demolish a bowl of rice smothered in soy sauce.

Oh, but I forgot balsamic vinegar, god I could drink the stuff, mmm, with lovely crusty bread dipped in it.

I don't know! Ketchup definitely, couldn't have chips without it. Then a toss up between the soy and balsamic.

Drayford · 11/08/2010 00:15

In place of my previous post - maggi sauce (or aromat) and tabasco instead of soya and tabasco. I forgot my swiss roots for a while until I cooked supper this evening!

Smash09 · 11/08/2010 00:28

Terrible decision to have to make, it's shocking!
I think I'll just have to go with logic on the ones I would miss most - vinegar and mayo Grin... the way I'm getting round it is that I would have foods which were already quite salty. Cheeeky!
