Well, I actually got to see a 'grown up' film for the first time in over a year and it was good! Best disaster movie (if that's your thing) for a very long time. Not gung-ho like Independence Day. The 'hero' TC wasn't out to save the planet, just save his estranged kids, who are left with him for the weekend. Bit sentimental at the end and I don't know how true the film is to the book, but not a bad night out.

the movie was a bit of a let-down imo. tom cruise was highly unbelievable as your average joe. and despite all the hype, the movie lacked action, like jodee says it is not like Independence Day.
However, there was a bit too much blood and gore.but the ending was so anti-climactic!!!what a disappointment.

(warning! slight spoiler ahead)
Hey Jodee, did you figure out how his ex-wife and her parents survived?weird.
also do u reckon her new hubby got killed??

jodee · 05/07/2005 19:18

Hi hazlinh (sorry, only just saw your response!). Do you not think TC that believable? I think he's become a very versatile actor as he's matured, never used to like him but I enjoy all his more recent films now.

No idea now the family survived, it looked like just another windy autumn day in Boston, didn't it.

Thought it very funny how TC had the only working car (apart from the army) in the whole of NY!

can i just ask how scary it is? I would love to see this movie but am a complete wimp when it comes to anything remotely scary!!!!

LittleStarsweeper · 05/07/2005 19:23

Wouldnt call it scary, but rivetting from start to finish. I didnt take my eyes off the screen for a moment. Mind you I dont get out much

lilibet · 05/07/2005 19:37

It's a 12a, is it suitable for children?

jodee · 05/07/2005 19:43

Wouldn't say scary as in a horror film, more shocking - I wouldn't personally take an under 12.

SecondhandRose · 05/07/2005 19:43

No def. not suitable for children, DH saw it last night.

swiperfox · 05/07/2005 19:44

is it very gory? lol sorry i'm so pathetic but desperate to take dp to see it when we go out for my birthday - would rather go in prepared than have nightmares for weeks lol

LittleStarsweeper · 05/07/2005 19:45

interesting, I wouldnt take under 15. I think it is emotionally draining and would be scary for kids.

Tortington · 05/07/2005 20:12

am taking my 12 year olds and 15 year old to see it this weekend. cant wait

MeerkatsUnite · 06/07/2005 17:38

Feel that its too intense overall for children under 12.

Two scenes I am thinking of in particular were quite intense.

Flamesparrow · 06/07/2005 17:39

Could have done with a bigger gap before you wrote the spoiler

Davros · 07/07/2005 21:35

Hoping to go tomorrow even tho DS's school closed. Can't wait.

hazlinh · 08/07/2005 05:52

yikes...sorry flamesparrow

it definitely not suitable for kids aged 12...very emotionally draining and traumatising imo

lol jodee...another windy autumn day in boston. i thot it was post-tripod and they all had looked traumatised and been thro hell.

Flamesparrow · 08/07/2005 08:03

Was a tad hormonal that day

Tis my own fault for reading the thread... normally I don't in case I see something I shouldn't

hamster · 08/07/2005 08:50

Good-not as good as the original.
Obviously the effects are excellent, not a film you'd take the kids to see...put it that way!

QueenEagle · 08/07/2005 08:56

dh and me saw it the other night. It's not action-packed and full of stunts in a Bruce Willis or Will Smith sorta way - true, but still scary and shocking in places; its done more from an everyday-Joe kinda perspective.

I thought it was pretty good and I will take my older 2 kids aged 13 and 11 to see it. Won't take my 9 year old though despite him pleading with me. I think he would have nightmares about it especially as a lot of the action centres around a little girl. I'm quite looking forward to seeing it again.

Diddle · 08/07/2005 17:34

well Dh and I loved it, I am a TC fan though. can;t believe he is 43, probably the oldest man i've fancied, i'm ony 24. Hes yummy. We loved it so much we're going again next weekend. can't wait for the dvd to come out.

Twiga · 08/07/2005 17:53

Went to see this with dh last night and really enjoyed it. As a fan of Wells' book I was dreading the fact that they might have mangled it, but was pleasantly suprised with how well done the story was. Felt they kept the main themes/elements of the book despite the modern day setting - also the monolouges at the start/finsh were lifted directly from the book which was a nice touch. Wouldn't take a child below the age of 12 to see it for the reasons others have stated - not a fan of scarey films myself but this was ok, not paticularly gorey and anything horrible was implied rather than shown.

Cristina7 · 08/07/2005 18:12

I saw this on Wednesday, a parent & baby screening at the local Odeon. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I'm sending DH & DS(5) tomorrow to see it.

hercules · 08/07/2005 18:12

I promised to take ds (91/2) to see this. Is it really not good for this age?

Davros · 08/07/2005 20:02

I would NOT take a 9 year old, its relentless. There's no time for anything much except surviving. It was good, can't say it qualifies as a multi-viewer on my personal film rating system. I like Tom Cruise, he's a really good actor and love Spielberg usually (not including AI). I think anyone more sensitive than me might get freaked out by it after the events yesterday. Full of very scared people trying to get away, thinking they are going to be killed. Excellent FX

QueenEagle · 09/07/2005 11:10

Cristina7 - are you seriously taking your 5 year old to see this film???

I would advise strongly against it. I took my dd aged 13 and ds1 aged 11.5 and they were both jumping out of their seats and ds kept holding on to me at various points. A 5 year old will be seriously spooked by it. Don't do it.

MistressMary · 09/07/2005 11:22

I thought it was very scarey and thought 12a was not suitable even. A bit nasty in one or two places.

Very intense all the way through.

hercules · 09/07/2005 11:28

Told ds he's not coming with!
