Well, I actually got to see a 'grown up' film for the first time in over a year and it was good! Best disaster movie (if that's your thing) for a very long time. Not gung-ho like Independence Day. The 'hero' TC wasn't out to save the planet, just save his estranged kids, who are left with him for the weekend. Bit sentimental at the end and I don't know how true the film is to the book, but not a bad night out.

hercules - I didn't take my 9 yr old and he was gutted about it but i seriously think he would be having nightmares if he did see it.

Cristina7 · 09/07/2005 21:19

Yes, I took my 5 year old to see this today and he was fine. I think at that age they can be a bit too young to be scared IYSWIM, they don't quite understand. He was there with his mum and dad (and his 4 m.o. sister who slept all the way through) and he didn't cuddle into us more than once or twice, no worse than Dr Who.

MistressMary · 09/07/2005 21:21

Hope you have no nightmares to deal with though.

Cristina7 · 09/07/2005 21:27

I'll let you know tomorrow. He's just got dry at night though (although dry during the day from 1.5) and whenever he has an accident he says it's because he had a bad dream. So not totally reliable.

MistressMary · 09/07/2005 21:33

Good luck.

wheresmyfroggy · 09/07/2005 21:34

From your reviews it sound very similar to 'Signs' which was a terrible movie so i think i'll avoid

MistressMary · 09/07/2005 21:34

Signs was not what I expected too.

fairydust · 09/07/2005 21:47

personaly thought it was crap - to many special effects not worth the money - tom looked fine though

Cristina7 · 09/07/2005 21:49

I haven't seen "Signs" but WOTW was really good. I'm not one for Sci-Fi and DH had warned me that it will have been totally americanised but even he admitted today that it was a good movie. I've seen it twice now. Can you believe, my 4 month old was refused admission to an over 15 film (Mr & Mrs Smith)? I guess they have to draw the line somewhere.

Cristina7 · 09/07/2005 21:50

Tom looked a bit fat and strangely noone was taller than him.

sheepgomeep · 10/07/2005 00:23

I've just got in from seeing this and I have to admit I thought it was rather good. I'm not a huge fan of sci fi disaster movies apart from deep impact or was it sudden impact.. that one with elijah wood, Dante's Peake and dare I say it signs. Loathed Armageddon.

I agree I defineltey wouldn't take an under 12 to see it unless you are sure that they can cope with it. It is pretty intense and rather chilling in places. I thought it was quite gory too tbh a couple of scenes really stick in my mind. There is also another scene that I found quite chilling too between Ray and his daughter, don't want to say too much really .
I have never liked Tom Cruises films much but I thought he played a good part and its the first time I can actually say phwoaargghh about him. He deffo gets better with age

Cristina7 · 10/07/2005 10:56

Quick note to say Dominic (5) had no nightmares and didn't wet the bed. He is probably just too young to understand why it was so scary.

Elf1981 · 10/07/2005 11:37

Saw this on Friday night and don't think I'd let a 15 year old see it.
A 12A is a film where you can take under 12's if you want to, but no way would I have done so.
There are several really tense / gory / disturbing scenes. Okay, its a slightly far fetched film, but I really did find the scene where TC steps out to look for his daughter after she runs off and he's confronted with rivers of blood and all the goopy stuff a tad too much, and I'm nearly 24!!

biglips · 10/07/2005 11:38

im gonna watch it tmrw nite - cant wait!!

biglips · 10/07/2005 11:40

i think nowadays 15 used to be an 18, pg/12 is a 15, and 12a is still a 15.... as i went to see Stars wars and it was scary but it was an 12a..i thought it should be a 15.

Cristina7 · 10/07/2005 11:46

In this case i think the 12A certificate was well placed. Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult. I'd seen the film on Wednesday on my own (actually, with my 4 month old) and I used my judgement of how my 5 year old is, his level of understanding etc, and decided it was OK for him to see it. He was fine. Other people can judge and decide differently for their own children. Tut, tut.

WideWebWitch · 10/07/2005 12:19

Goodness, I wouldn't have taken a 5yo either and I definitely wouldn't let my 7.5yo watch it, I thought it was pretty terrifying. I couldn't watch when the girl insisted on going off for a wee on her own but I am a total wimp and jump out of my skin at the slightest thing. Having said that, I like a good disaster movie but this wasn't. I thought it started well and didn't quite deliver really, nowhere near as slick or good as say, Independence Day/The Day After Tomorrow etc. The girl reminded me of dd so I think that added extra terror for me.

Davros · 10/07/2005 17:33

Tom's son looked taller than him but I think they made him sit down or go up a slope in most of their scenes together
