What films are as good as Fargo?

I want to watch some brilliant films. I am fussy and have a short attention span when it comes to film and I need them to be fantastic and gripping or I give up. Partner works in library and brings home lots of dvds but I probably reject about 8/10. The last brilliant one I saw was Fargo a couple of weeks ago and it made me want to see more really fab films. What would you recommend?

Jbck and others Yes 'Burn after Reading' very Cohen bros film. Kept passing over 'Fargo' at first in the video shop then watched it..... 'its just so me'
oh!if you like a film with twists and thought provoking then 'Crash' with lots of big Stars. (still drunk can't remember who's in it, other might help me!!!)
Just can't stand Meryl, too much over acting for me!

OOOOOh I second Crash, it was much better than I thought it would be. It was hyped a lot with the Oscar connection and I thought it might disappoint but not a bit of it.

In The Valley of Elah.

Crash, eh? Never fancied it but if it has hidden depths I must check it out!

Foreign language is fine.

Try 'Read My Lips' - French film by Jacques Audiard (who directed The Beat That My Heart Skipped - also v good, as is A Self-Made Hero, another one of his). Not at all like Fargo but like the Coens' films, it is a bit of a genre-bender.

Hidden (Caché)

I second Three Colours - but be sure to watch them in order (Blue - White - Red) and fairly close together for maximum enjoyment

Have you seen Paul Thomas Anderson's films (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood)?

Todd Solondz also excellent, especially Happiness

Little Miss Sunshine is a bit off the wall like Fargo
I loved it

Good call MrsM - I thought Little Miss Sunshine was great too.

Also enjoyed Sideways.

I'm getting a bit sick of identikit US indie films in the mould of Juno now though - there are so many of the damn things, all with annoying cutesy soundtracks

The Painted Veil with Naomi Watts is a gritty love story. I really loved this film.

I love Fargo ,tho' The Big Lebowski is my fave.

I second 'Tell no-one' (Ne le dis a personne).

I love Wes Anderson films although they're not to everyone's taste.

The Royal Tannenbaums is fab.

Also there's a great film I saw ages ago called (I think) Ghostworld?? It's not a horror film. It has Steve Buscemi in and is great.
