What films are as good as Fargo?

I want to watch some brilliant films. I am fussy and have a short attention span when it comes to film and I need them to be fantastic and gripping or I give up. Partner works in library and brings home lots of dvds but I probably reject about 8/10. The last brilliant one I saw was Fargo a couple of weeks ago and it made me want to see more really fab films. What would you recommend?

Dangerous Liaisons

Orange County

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 11/07/2009 19:52

oh yes All About Eve.

Sublime.

sunshiney · 11/07/2009 19:53

if you liked Fargo, you'll probably like Shallow Grave (with Ewan MacGregor).

Thunderduck · 11/07/2009 19:56

Am I the only person who hated Fargo?

daftpunk · 11/07/2009 19:56

snice · 11/07/2009 19:57

Michael Clayton is very good

PuppyMonkey · 11/07/2009 19:59

What a very open request - "fab films"! You'll end up with a list about a million pages long.

If you like Fargo, you need to see Blood Simple.

Have you seen Pulp Fiction? And...
Zodiac
American Beauty?
Benjamin Button
Lord of the Rings

Course, one of my fave films is Armageddon...

And I also like all the MGM musicals. And Jimmy Stewart.

All fab imho. All extremely different from each other though!

Thunderduck · 11/07/2009 20:00

Which genre of films do you like?

cornsilk · 11/07/2009 20:01

Saw Taken recently with Liam Neeson - very good.

mrsruffallo · 11/07/2009 20:01

Not Zodiac..I found that so tiresome!

Love love love Bette Davis DP

cornsilk · 11/07/2009 20:02

I wasn't actually with Liam Neeson - he was in the film!

ScummyMummy · 11/07/2009 20:16

Gran Turino looked good, Starbear- partner brought it home but had to return it before i saw it (Love 'drunk now too much wine' btw!)

I did like Shallow Grave but thought it had a style over substancey feel, tbh.

Must check out Orange County and Michael Clayton.

trainspotting was a good film..

TDiddy · 11/07/2009 20:19

the three colours trilogy

yes, Shallow Grave

definitely Dangerous Liaisons

Michael Collins (Lliam Neeson)

TDiddy · 11/07/2009 20:23

I like looking at Kristin Scott Thomas (her movies, that is ): Bitter Moon, English Patient

I guess I have mention 4 Weddings and a funeral then.

Jbck · 11/07/2009 20:28

Meryl Streep is excellent in Doubt. Thought it was very good.
Gone Baby Gone gripping and quite in bits.
Neither anything like Fargo though which is one of my all time faves. I haven't seen Burn after reading which is what I think Starbear meant, looked good though.

ScummyMummy · 11/07/2009 20:28

Yes, it is open, isn't it, pm?! Am not very good on picking genres, tbh. I don't really tend to like war films or horror or extreme violence but there are always exceptions that prove the rule like The Deer Hunter, 28 days later, Fargo itself.

Haven't seen Benjamin Button- wasn't sure I'd like that from the trailer- is it v sentimental?

Will have to check out Bette Davis. Maybe some Hitchcock as well.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions, everyone.

Burn after reading - has Brad Pitt which can't be bad!(is that what you meant Starbear?!).

Basically any Coen Brothers' film is great.

I also love Desperado and the follow up Once upon a time in Mexico. But then, I have a HUGE thing for Antonio Banderas ....and Jonny Depp is in the second one too - doesn't get much better than that...

hairycaterpillar · 11/07/2009 20:35

French film (has subtitles) called "Tell No One" is fantastic.

ScummyMummy · 11/07/2009 20:35

I really enjoyed Burn after Reading. Not quite as good as some of their others but very gripping.

Must have a look at Doubt and Bitter Moon as well. And have always meant to catch up with 3 colours trilogy, tdiddy.

lol at you going to the cinema with Liam, cornsilk!

Really liked Trainspotting, both film and book, dp. Re-watched it quite recently, actually and had forgotten just how good it was.

Isn't Meryl Streep always excellent! Can anyone think of a better actress?

I had hopes for Gwyneth Palthrow but Meryl is a hard act to follow.

TDiddy · 11/07/2009 20:40

Where are the Brando, Robert Redford and Paul Newman movies? Are we all so very young?

ScummyMummy · 11/07/2009 20:44

I love Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. V feelgood.

Dirty Dozen

Thunderduck · 11/07/2009 20:50

If you're willing to watch foreign language films then Central Station is great.
