Yup, there's a new Star Trek movie, bringing Kirk and Spock back to life. Starts in May.

I will proudly go where no Mumnetter has gone before and say, "I love Star Trek".

Can't wait!

It's soooo clever - now we can start a whole new series, with lots of in jokes but without all the die hard fans getting upset. It's brilliant.

And fairly simple - sometimes these can be so complex your head aches.

Sidge - I'd be happy with DS1 seeing it (he's 11), nothing in there that would worry me at all.

The AR bit is so cool it makes me grin like a mad thing just thinking about it. I did all the way through the film anyway!

Sidge · 11/05/2009 20:08

Thanks serenity - I was wondering if it would be ok for DD1 who is 10.5. She is quite sensible but isn't very 'streetwise' and I wasn't sure if it would be a bit too adult for her.

DH and I might go and see it with her then!

serenity · 11/05/2009 20:58

There's a fair amount of fighting, and one bed scene that isn't graphic (kissing in silhouette) and kiss/hug in a lift.

Have a look at the BBFC's report for details of why it was a 12a. (I'm worried I might be a lax parent and make you traumatise your DD!)

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2009 17:37

So there are 3 theories of time travel, I think.

1: You can't change the future, you can only make it happen - there is only one timeline, whatever you try to do in the past will just make the future (as you have seen) happen.

2: Every single decision, flap of a butterfly's wings, etc, can change the future. If you go back in time the future will change because of cascading causality (made-up term, probably not on wikipedia under that name). There are lots of timelines.

3: As in this film. Going back in time you can change the future, (or cause it to go down a different path). There are lots of timelines. But somethings are fated. Some events or interactions are sticky. You might say that Spock and Kirk are ta'veren (if you're a particular kind of geek like me you might anyway )

BlingDreaming · 12/05/2009 18:01

Yes - definitely 3. But they are meant to be together - Spock and Kirk on the ice planet together is one thing, but Scotty...?!

As a story idea though, I love the concept - I think it is done so much better than say the James Bond movies ? where there?s a constant battle and eventually with Daniel they had to go back to the beginning.

I did spend some time trying to work out though if this means that Picard and the gang?s timeline will of course intrinsically change and how would that affect things? Ditto ? the old spock has lost ?his? kirk who is in that weird time continuum thing that Picard has to rescue him from, what does it mean for him to see the young Kirk and have to accept that it?s not his friend?

Oh, and you know that the last WOT book is coming out soon? With the new author?

Am very excited but sadly will have to read the first 11 again to refresh my memory!

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2009 18:20

Really? Soon?! That makes me want to go squee!

(disclaimer, I am not responsible for time lost if you click that link, and then click some more, and find yourself reading randomness for many hours)

I think he will probably just get on with other things and not really interact with his old/new friends very much.

It means they can continue these stories any way thy like without regard for canon. It gives a real feeling of peril for the main charcters, because they could die. If it was just a straight prequel then the fans already know how each of these people dies so there's no sense of jeaopardy.

BlingDreaming · 12/05/2009 18:25

god, I hadn't thought of that. You're totally right. They could DIE. This is bad. Very bad.

Yup - I seem to recall reading somewhere that it will be ready this "fall". Maybe it's next "fall" but I'm sure it's this one.

Supposedly he has notes and chapter outlines etc.

OMG saw Star Trek Yesterday.. I must had had the maddest stupid grin on during the entire movie. I would quite happily go see it again.. absoloutly besotted with the AR bit...and how everything was so much grittier and makes you want to sink your teeth in..

hoppybird · 26/05/2009 14:33

We saw Star Trek yesterday (first time we've been out to the cinema in a couple of years). It was most enjoyable!

Was surprised at there being a moment at the beginning when I almost blubbed (just managed to hold it together though), and was very impressed with the young adrenaline crazy Kirk, and the child Spock. Though it was mean, I thought the Vulcan bullying was wryly humourous, in fact, there was plenty of humour throughout the film - loved the hilarious injections scene and Chekov's accent.

Overall, it was a thrilling ride, and Spock in particular stole the show.

I would thoroughly recommend it to any Star Trek lovers who aren't too precious about the original movies/tv show, but who will appreciate and understand the many references and characterisations.

Metatron · 26/05/2009 14:44

Loved it. DH and I came out grinning like Bonny Langford. Spock great but hello! Doc mcCoy was amazing. "are you out of your vulcan mind?" got a cheer from me.

notyummy · 26/05/2009 14:47

It is FAB! DH and I both really enjoyed it. I couldn't help thinking a bit about Galaxy Quest when watching it though....DH and I both guessed that the 'unnamed ensign' who plummets down to the planet with Kirk and Sulu would die because that was the rule in Galaxy Quest....and he did

Galaxy Quest - another great film....but that's a whole other thread.

Sycamoretree · 26/05/2009 14:51

Oh, DH and I also LOVED it. I haven't even seen any episodes/other star trek films but it looked great so I agreed to go (for my birthday!) and it did not disappoint.

I thought it was smart and really simply plotted - and I mean that in a complimentary way. No need for ridiculous double bluff endings or hyper convaluted story strands, just good clean fun

Sycamoretree · 26/05/2009 14:55

This for Trillianastra

Starts shooting next month...

BexieID · 26/05/2009 15:03

DP and me are Trekkies, have been to a few conventions and we both loved the new film. We are hoping to see it again but this time at the IMAX theatre!

hoppybird · 26/05/2009 17:19

Metatron - Oh absolutely - "are you out of your Vulcan mind?!" Fab! Bone was, indeed, excellent.

hoppybird · 26/05/2009 17:20

Bones

Sidge · 29/05/2009 00:12

Just got back from seeing this - I have never seen any other Star Trek stuff but LOVED this!

Lots of fun, Kirk was pretty pleasing on the eye and Spock was great. Fab special effects and some great one-liners.

Would recommend.

loved it

plus3 · 29/05/2009 09:21

Saw it last night and absolutely loved it!!! Not sure if it wasn't initally just the thrill of an unexpected night out But a quite wonderful Spock and Kirk and a very very lovely Bones and a late apperance from Scotty all made one very good film. highly recommended!

TrillianAstra · 29/05/2009 09:28

Ooooh, more Simon Peggy goodness, thanks Sycamore!

Pixel · 15/06/2009 22:50

I've just seen Star Trek at the IMAX and it was well worth the wait, absolutely brilliant. All the characters were spot-on and I came out wishing I could sit through it all again.

(possible spoiler ahead though trying not to be)

I'm a bit confused though, as this is a prequel shouldn't everything in the original series, and other films, still stand? (I know it was all a bit wibbly wobbly time travelly but even so) I don't want to spoil things for anyone so I'll just say that right until the end I was expecting [character who died] to be brought back somehow, because I've seen him/her in an episode of the original series and also The Voyage Home.
