Yup, there's a new Star Trek movie, bringing Kirk and Spock back to life. Starts in May.

I will proudly go where no Mumnetter has gone before and say, "I love Star Trek".

Can't wait!

Bling - I read quite a lot of different authors, but the ones that are still in my bookcase include Diane Carey, Carolyn Clowes, L A Graf, Julia Ecklar, Diane Duane, Gene DeWeese and J M Dillard.

My two favourites are Uhura's Song, by Janet Kagan, and Tears of the Singers, by Melinda Snodgrass.

I think I have just outed myself as a total anorak, haven't I?

SouthernLights · 22/04/2009 10:34

THE GEEKS SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH!

Sorry for shouting.

But it's true.

spokette · 22/04/2009 11:15

Oh my goodness, have you seen the pic of Chris Pine from Sockmonkey's link?

He is absolutely divine. I would love to boldy go where no woman has gone before with him.

I have adored Star Trek since I was a child and Nichelle Nichols was a heroine for me because she was only a handful of black women with a regular appearance on TV in a role that was intelligent as well as aspirational as opposed to just plain servient.

spokette · 22/04/2009 11:21

Stayingsunnygril

I really enjoyed Tears of the Singers too

Stayingsunnygirl · 22/04/2009 11:57

A soulmate!!

BlingDreaming · 22/04/2009 13:35

I'm off to Amazon...

BlingDreaming · 22/04/2009 13:53

... and I'm back - totally overwhelmed. Using Mobipocket I found a wide range of those authors, but don't know where to start (bearing in mind that I haven't watched Star Trek original in years but more TNG and DP9). So... please recommend a starting point. Uhura's Song is available - can I start there?

OP posts:
Stayingsunnygirl · 22/04/2009 13:54

Uhura's song is one of my favourites, Bling. I'd also recommend The Wounded Sky by Diane Duane, and The Kobyashi Maru by Julia Ecklar.

If you lived near me, you could have the run of my library!

Iklboo · 22/04/2009 13:55

I'm muck more of a Trekkie/Trekker than DH. I am SOOOOO looking forward to it. And X-Men Origins - Wolverine!!

BlingDreaming · 22/04/2009 14:40

So starting there won't be weird? I won't feel like I don't understand the background?

Where are you? Anywhere near London?

OP posts:
Stayingsunnygirl · 22/04/2009 14:44

The background should be fine, Bling - and I'm near Glasgow - sorry.

BlingDreaming · 22/04/2009 14:50

mmm... not so much then!

Okay, I'm buying it. I need something on my blackberry for boring meetings the train home!

I'm looking forward to watching it.. my dad taught me to do the vulcan thing when I was only small and I used to watch the original series and next gen... though I have never liked the movies as much as the tv shows.. I'm really looking forward to seeing this one.. shines up geek badge of honor

sweetkitty · 01/05/2009 14:45

Am trying to find someone to look after the DDs so DP and I can go see it.

I will so miss William Shatners overacting though, some of his lines in the films are classics.

meridian · 01/05/2009 14:54

sweetkitty- if you need the Shatnerfix.. watch Boston legal.. its not sci fi but Shatner is freaking awesom as Denny Crane.

thinks I may be watching Supernatural too much as I'm useing "awesome" too often...which is kinda awesome

sweetkitty · 01/05/2009 15:47

"Your going to have to come down here Khan, your going to have to come down here!"

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 01/05/2009 16:08

I'm 37+ weeks pg and desperate for baby to come out now.

Except, I want to see Star Trek next weekend, so don't want baby here until after that. I will be furious if the baby arrives before about 10pm next Saturday .

I got all breathless and squeaky and had to rush out and phone DH when I saw the trailer in the cinema last week.

DH can quote most of WoK, his favourite. I just love Ricardo Montelban. We watched all of the series, all of the films.

And I really, really fancy Zachary Quack Quinto who will be playing Spock. Wrrrrrowl!!

Springfleurs · 07/05/2009 15:01

Went this morning at 11.00 am. How keen am I?

Very, very good. Put it this way I cried in the first five minutes so it is surprising in that way. Funny, fab special effects NO-ONE could have played the part of Spock better. Highly recommended.

Mercedes · 09/05/2009 21:58

I've just seen it tonight and I really enjoyed it. Spock was fab and including Simon Pegg as Scotty was genius.

Not a pastiche but nods to the original series and takes account of other sci-fi films as well.

My dp wanted to take our dd and I'm glad I persuaded him not to. When certain phrases or words came up and the audience laughed in recognition I know my dd would be asking why are people laughing which would have spoiled it for me.

Excellent film.

serenity · 09/05/2009 23:55

Another massive thumbs up here. I spent the whole film with a huge grin on my face, because it was just so perfect.

I want to see it again, NOW!

YanknCock · 10/05/2009 00:08

It was excellent.

I thought it was just the pregnancy hormones, but I see I'm not the only one who was crying at the beginning.

Was giggling at all the homages, especially loved that they got in a bit about Enterprise (STILL angry about that being cancelled!).

Sidge · 11/05/2009 16:00

I'm not a Trekkie but thought the trailer looked good so might go and see it with DH.

Just one question though to those who have seen it - would it be suitable for older children, eg 11 or 12? I know it's rated 12A but would like to know what sort of content it has and whether it would be ok for children.

BlingDreaming · 11/05/2009 16:12

It was great. Really enjoyed it! Going to see it again with my sister .

I missed the reference to Enterprise. I got lots but am concerned I missed lots too- clearly I'll be buying the DCD with commentary in due course!

StealthPolarBear · 11/05/2009 16:22

I'm being dragged to see it with DH and have been dreading it (not helped by DH's threats of dressing up and making me dress up too ) but he made me watch the trailer and it actually dfoes look quite good - a proper sci fi action film rather than a geeky episode of Star Trek!

TrillianAstra · 11/05/2009 16:39

Exactly Stealth, IMO it would have been a good scifi film even without the StarTrekkyness. I've hardly seen any old Star Trek so probably missed a lot of jokes anyway.

Don't read crossed-out bit if you don't want a spolier but does anyone want to talk about why it's very cool that they're in an alternate reality?
