Sweeny Todd is a really great film and it has the added bonus od Johnny Depp in it!

southeastalien · 31/10/2008 12:16

snow white

retiredgoth1 · 31/10/2008 12:16

....Shawshank Redemption is indeed splendid, but is a bit of a staple of these lists nowadays it seems.

(When I were a lad, Citizen Kane had that honour. It's a sledge, by the way)

...it is also a little difficult to disagree with It's a Wonderful Life. Best xmas film for sure.

...I somewhat shamefacedly concur with the thrice nominated Breakfast Club, too. It is to do with being 'd'un certain age' methinks.

(and anyway, Ally Sheedy looked MUCH better before Molly Ringwald did the makeover)

....and as for a 'so bad it's good' nomination, Escape to Victory wins everytime.

(Sly Stallone as the midget goalie is a marvel)

But the best?

it's mawkish. It's jingoistic. I love it.

jumpingbeans · 31/10/2008 12:21

Omg, fried green toms is one of my fav, along with the colour purple,on golden pond, whatever happened to baby jane, any old zigfield follie's okay I will stop now I could go on and on..no..okay

PuppyMonkey · 31/10/2008 12:23

How can anybody not like Shawshank???

Yes to It's a Wonderful Life obviously and
Singing In the Rain

And bloody hell, no-one has mentioned Ferris Bueller's Day off have they? Good God I stay off MN for a few days and look what happens....

OrmIrian · 31/10/2008 12:24

Heat, maybe.
Brazil
Zed and 2 noughts
Rebecca

retiredgoth1 · 31/10/2008 12:25

...No Ferris Bueller 'tis true.

No Pretty in Pink either! But I guess the Breakfast Club covers the 'Brat Pack" movies en masse....

OrmIrian · 31/10/2008 12:26

Loads of films whose names I can't remember.
Memory appears to be shot.

Never seen the Godfather films Never appealed to me much for some reason

OrmIrian · 31/10/2008 12:27

Which is the one with Frank Sinatra where they go to a house in preparation for a big wedding? Philadelphia Story? Love that.

WilyWombat · 31/10/2008 12:29

Princess Bride
The Last Emperor
Empire of the Sun

WilyWombat · 31/10/2008 12:30

Oh and I loved Pretty in Pink

southeastalien · 31/10/2008 12:30

i watched empire of the sun on sunday, it made me cry

WilyWombat · 31/10/2008 12:34

EOS always makes me cry.

PuppyMonkey · 31/10/2008 12:36

High Society is the one with Frank Sinatra...

Oh yes, Armageddon obviously...

retiredgoth1 · 31/10/2008 12:40

.....and Donnie Darko, too!

Not the mucked up 'directors cut' thingy but the original release...

...anything that starts with a sequence choreographed to 'The Killing Moon' is ok by me.

No-one understands it, but that is (I think) the point.

...and as for the Godfather. Never fancied 'em myself. Though I do like the oft repeated adage 'all "2" movies are to be avoided, except the Godfather and Toy Story'.

Well. I can vouch for Toy Story 2 at least......

noonki · 31/10/2008 12:45

How about the lady killers?
Toy story 2

I second Some Like it hot... nobody's perfect (laugh everytime)

and It 'sa wonderful life (and when a bell rings..cry everytime)

Schindlist list is phenomenal

Sound of music is the biggest pile of rubbish but I love it( just how many times do they sing 'doe a deer??)

Janiete - the Breakfast club - I had such a crush on both Judd nelson and Wionna rider as a teen

PuppyMonkey · 31/10/2008 12:45

Oh no, hate Donnie Darko. Nothing happens in it..

Don't like the Godfather films much either. Good acting, I appreciate that, but they just don't engage me much...

Bink · 31/10/2008 12:50

I nominate:

Sunset Boulevard
Blade Runner

I second:

Fargo
Spinal Tap

I veto:

Godfather stuff
anything Richard Curtis had anything to do with

Enraha · 31/10/2008 13:06

I've never got the Shawshank adulation either.

Boring old Morgan Freebore, boring old murderous Tim Robbins, slight story.

Disney Prison, spot on

I suppose it's the equivalent of "You've Had a Bad Day" being the most played record of the last 5 years. Blandness rules.

Sorry, not helping am I.

Everyone knows the all-time list of top movies is:

  1. The Shawshank Redemption
  2. Star Wars
  3. Bohemian Rhapsody
Saturn74 · 31/10/2008 13:08

Brief Encounter

Cremolatorium · 31/10/2008 13:09

What about Pulp Fiction?
