Went to see Pressure

And I'm surprised not to see it mentioned here.

I figure that anyone going to see it knows what it’s about: The weather forecasting which was so crucial on the eve of D-Day, as Eisenhower was about to launch the American military across the English Channel in WWII.

The hero is a prim Scot named Stagg, recommended to Eisenhower by Churchill, who declared him the best meteorologist in England. Stagg is the doughty loner among all the Americans in the group, and particularly butts up against Eisenhower’s own trusted cocky meteorologist, who blithely predicts perfect weather, no matter how strongly Stagg contradicts this with his rock-firm conviction of potentially lethal storms. Even if you don’t know history, all cinematic convention dictates that Stagg will be proved right, so there’s that pleasant wait for the shoe of vindication to drop.

The cast was almost completely unfamiliar to me, with the exception of a beefy Brendan Fraser as Ike. But it looks to be a real labor of love with Anthony Maras as director, co-screenwriter, and editor.

It’s a curious movie, because you could undoubtedly make an interesting free 50-minute documentary on it for television, but it takes nerve to think you can pull off a feature film, and get people to come and pay for it. (Of course, if it had been made 20-70 years ago, you could get WWII vets to go.) It works well, though. It’s a nice production, and manages to convey the tension and high stakes, even in the absence of car chases or explosions.

(Trivia, via IMDB: In a remarkable coincidence, one of the assistant editors hired to go through that archival footage turned out to be James Stagg - the grandson of the real Dr. James Stagg whose story the film tells - a fact that was not known when the hiring decision was made.)

I saw this last night and really enjoyed it.

@Clearinguptheclutter

reviews are pretty mixed though. Mark Kermode liked it but explained that it differs quite significantly from what actually happened

Wouldn't be surprised, from way back recollections of the details of this particular story have varied and liberties will have been taken in the making of the film.

Even old classics made not long post WW2 like the Dam Busters played a bit fast and loose with the truth (sometimes deliberately) and in the case of the Dam Busters made one of the central characters appear much more sympathetic/vaguely likeable than many recall him being in real life.

As long as people come away from films like these having been entertained but are mindful they're not necessarily telling an accurate story no harm done.

Edited

Totally agree
Pretty much all movies about historical events change the narrative slightly or leave some stuff/characters out completely or even invent them

doesn’t meant they’re not good films

I was just merely pointing out that if people are wondering about Stagg, the story isn’t quite like it was told here

Only just been released here, pretty sure I’d like it

Andrew Scott and Damien Lewis are extremely well known actors though possibly better known for tv and theatre than for movies

reviews are pretty mixed though. Mark Kermode liked it but explained that it differs quite significantly from what actually happened as there was a Norwegian meteorologist involved who did actually call the shots and he was ignored entirely in the film (or so i understand)

That’s interesting. Radio 4 did a bit about it today and their meteorologist was saying how well known and well thought of Stagg is amongst meteorologists. Makes me want to find a factual
account.

Went to see it tonight with DH. Work colleague has seen the play and recommended going to see the film. Really enjoyed it. Thought BF and AS were excellent. Despite knowing how it all plays out in real life it’s very tense, the soundtrack is good at building the tension as well as the performances. Stagg played as exactly the dour, dry Scotsman I imagined he would be.

I went to see it this week, I didn't know any of the cast apart from Con O'Neill but if they are mainly TV actors that's probably why as I don't watch TV drama much. I thoroughly enjoyed it, really well acted, tense but not too bad as we know how D Day ends. The only thing that grated for me is that the house looked nothing like the real one.

I loved it. Would love to see it as a play.
The cast were superb. Brenda Fraser, Damian Lewis, Andrew Scott and Kerry Condon were all outstanding.

I thought it was excellent. A story about WW2 I didn't know - and a really important one given the significance of the D day landings. Scott was great, but I also really rated Brendan Fraser as Eisenhower - really made you feel for the man making those decisions. Plus as a geographer, an interesting insight into the history of meteorology.
