Went to see Pressure

And I'm surprised not to see it mentioned here.

I figure that anyone going to see it knows what it’s about: The weather forecasting which was so crucial on the eve of D-Day, as Eisenhower was about to launch the American military across the English Channel in WWII.

The hero is a prim Scot named Stagg, recommended to Eisenhower by Churchill, who declared him the best meteorologist in England. Stagg is the doughty loner among all the Americans in the group, and particularly butts up against Eisenhower’s own trusted cocky meteorologist, who blithely predicts perfect weather, no matter how strongly Stagg contradicts this with his rock-firm conviction of potentially lethal storms. Even if you don’t know history, all cinematic convention dictates that Stagg will be proved right, so there’s that pleasant wait for the shoe of vindication to drop.

The cast was almost completely unfamiliar to me, with the exception of a beefy Brendan Fraser as Ike. But it looks to be a real labor of love with Anthony Maras as director, co-screenwriter, and editor.

It’s a curious movie, because you could undoubtedly make an interesting free 50-minute documentary on it for television, but it takes nerve to think you can pull off a feature film, and get people to come and pay for it. (Of course, if it had been made 20-70 years ago, you could get WWII vets to go.) It works well, though. It’s a nice production, and manages to convey the tension and high stakes, even in the absence of car chases or explosions.

(Trivia, via IMDB: In a remarkable coincidence, one of the assistant editors hired to go through that archival footage turned out to be James Stagg - the grandson of the real Dr. James Stagg whose story the film tells - a fact that was not known when the hiring decision was made.)

I saw it a couple of months ago and thought it was marvellous. It is still playing at my local flea pit so must be drawing the numbers in.

I thought Brendan Fraser was born to play Eisenhower but really, have you not heard of Andrew Scott before, OP? He is a wonderful actor and has made some brilliant film and tv.

mathanxiety · 07/07/2026 04:51

I went to see it with DD (mid 20s) as she had two free passes to the cinema it was playing in. DD was the youngest person in the cinema and she loved it just as much as I did.

We had seen a documentary a year before, called Three Days in June (or something like that), about the D Day weather forecasting, with interviews with the Irish postmistress from Blacksod Bay in Mayo who had recorded the small break in the bad weather as it developed out in the Atlantic.

I thought it was a really well made movie.

I've "heard" of Andrew Scott, and seen a couple of his movies (not television), but I guess he didn't make enough of an impression on me.

I saw the play a few years ago and loved it. Didn’t realise they’d made a film. Will try and find somewhere showing it. Thanks for the tip

I was trying to imagine it as a play. It's certainly true that it's a lot of talk with very little action. But the movie does a great job of making it visually interesting, not only with the different interiors, but the lovely outdoor spaces as well. And, at the end, some war bits, which seem jarringly out of place.

It was brilliant staging. The set was so simple but so effective. It was a basic office with a window and some pull down maps. The storm was fantastic with rain poring down behind the window.

I went to the Met Office in Exeter recently and they have the original hand drawn/written weather forecast for the D Day landings by Stagg in their library. It gave me goosebumps

I could see where that might feel claustrophobic - in a good way.

I’m going to see it on Sunday as it’s only just been released in the UK.

Only just been released in theaters?

I'm amazed! I would have thought it'd be released there first!

I love Andrew Scott, have been really wanting to watch this.

SisterMaryLuke · 09/09/2026 13:53

I went to see it this morning and thoroughly enjoyed it. Love Andrew Scott in most things and he was great in this as were all the actors. Didn't realise it was a play first.

Thanks for reminding me it was out now! I have an annoying shopping trip tomorrow ( buying clothes for an event…. I hate buying clothes). I’ll motivate myself to be efficient on clothes with the carrot of this film waiting at the end of it!

RitaIncognita · 09/09/2026 14:18

I have seen it twice, once in the movie theater and then again at home. I thought it was very well done. The acting was excellent all around. I have a good friend who is a climate scientist, and she has high praise for it as well.

It's particularly well-done if you consider what a tiny kernel of not-really-movie-material there is. I could just imagine Hollywood executives saying, "You want to make a two-hour movie about guys fighting over weather predictions?"

It is fantastic. Go

IsThisLifeNow · 09/09/2026 23:29

Yeah the subject sounds like it should be dry, but I really enjoyed it, good acting all round too!

upinaballoon · 10/09/2026 18:43

I've seen ads on the TV and it looked ok, so I mean to go soon. This is the first day it's been on at my local cinema - England. Nice to hear others have liked it.

NoEligibilityRequirementsApply · 10/09/2026 19:37

Saw it today and loved it. I thought all the main actors were terrific. I was so pleased to see such a solid and inspired performance by Brendan Fraser. Seems to me he is well overdue a decent role. Loved Andrew Scott. His performance was so subtle and powerful. I want to go again and relish it all a second time.

elastamum · 12/09/2026 21:47

I saw it yesterday with DH who is an academic in a related field. It was fabulous. The only thing I found slightly irritating was the sound of crickets at night. Somewhat ironically this isn't something you normally hear in the UK as we don't have a warm enough climate.

wellherewegoagainpeople · 12/09/2026 21:52

Yes, I enjoyed it. Damien Lewis is a well known actor, too.

Ha, funny you should mention that, I noticed too and thought it strange!

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/09/2026 08:54

Only just been released here, pretty sure I’d like it

Andrew Scott and Damien Lewis are extremely well known actors though possibly better known for tv and theatre than for movies

reviews are pretty mixed though. Mark Kermode liked it but explained that it differs quite significantly from what actually happened as there was a Norwegian meteorologist involved who did actually call the shots and he was ignored entirely in the film (or so i understand)

jelliebelly · 13/09/2026 08:55

We went to see it this week at dh request and to be honest I was prepared to be underwhelmed but it was fantastic - kept my attention the whole time the acting was superb.

Weekmindedfool · 13/09/2026 08:56

It wasnt just the American military who went across the channel OP.
