Can anyone recommend any films as spooky as the first Conjuring movie?

I didn’t think the first one was that scary. I thought the second one was scarier apart from the crooked man bit which was just stupid.

The last rites one was the best and scariest in my opinion.

I also really like the Insidious films can’t remember which one is the best (ie scariest) though.

I found the 2005 Amityville horror pretty scary.

The Sixth Sense

13 ghosts

ghost ship

Hereditary is good

StarCourt · 05/07/2026 01:24

I second Hereditary it’s horrendously good

SocksAndTheCity · 05/07/2026 07:47

Hereditary thirded, and I'll add Ringu, The VVitch and Weapons.

If the Conjuring type films are your preference (and I've only seen the first one) I'd also recommend Sinister, in the unlikely event you haven't already seen it Smile

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 05/07/2026 07:53

Hereditary is the only film that's scared me in probably 25 years, and I watch horror films every night before bed to wind down.

follygirl · 05/07/2026 08:07

I think ‘The Descent’ is pretty scary

SocksAndTheCity · 05/07/2026 08:52

The Descent is great, but it's not supernatural.

The Borderlands 2013

rainbowstardrops · 05/07/2026 09:06

Following this with interest because me and my DD like watching supernatural/horror films. We enjoyed all the Conjuring films.
@DreamingOfGeneHuntyou watch horror films to wind down??? 🫣🤣

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 05/07/2026 09:29

@rainbowstardrops I do! I find them calming. I don't know what that says about me😬

Hahaha! Love it! I’m usually hiding behind my hands!

There’s a film about an online seance (I think it’s called The Host). Only about an hour long and all done over a Zoom call. I thought it was really good!

AndSoFinally · 05/07/2026 09:46

Oh, not The Host, just Host

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 05/07/2026 09:49

Host is really good.
sinister is super creepy
paranormal activity (particularly the first one) are good supernatural films.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 05/07/2026 09:52

The newer Evil Dead films are very good if you like a lot of gore with your supernatural horror. I'm really looking forward to Evil Dead Burn.

The Ritual as well.

JoyousOpalLemur · 05/07/2026 09:53

I watched Coherence yesterday.

It was a really clever idea but poorly executed.

WhatWouldMyMamaSay · 05/07/2026 09:55

I found As Above So Below terrifying. It’s not that well known but so good.

Tollington · 05/07/2026 09:59

I liked Insidious and Paranormal Activity
The one with Ethan Hawke is good where he moves his family in to a house where people died. I also like The Ring and The Grudge. Blair Witch is a classic too

I enjoyed the new evil dead film and it was gory. If you like gore you may enjoy The mummy film, watched it yesterday and wow it was gory 😵‍💫

I got bored during the last Evil Dead film and fell asleep. I don't think they're scary either, which is also why I didn't recommend the Final Destination films even though I love them 😀

If you can track it down, there's an Irish film called The Canal from 2014 that scared the shit out of me at a horror festival that year. I don't remember that much about it but it took forever for the Q&A to get going afterwards because everyone was petrified 🤣

Snooks1971 · 05/07/2026 20:01

I apologise in advance if this has been mentioned already (cooking after gardening, not showered yet arghhh) but Babadook?

LilacHam · 05/07/2026 20:04

The woman in black. The 80s version or the 2010s one.

I thought Hereditary was horrible and wouldn't recommend it.
