Wish I had seen it at the cinema!

OP posts:
BillieWiper · 10/03/2026 19:31

I didn't think it was that great. It was way too long. The actor played him convincingly but the other characters were barely drawn at all and didn't seem to have any inner workings.

HollanderCottage · 13/03/2026 23:03

I adored it. Cried buckets!

mumofthemonsters808 · 13/03/2026 23:10

I thought it was brilliant.

SisSuffragette · 13/03/2026 23:15

Just watched it tonight and loved it

SunshinePlease24 · 13/03/2026 23:17

Although I think Maxine Peake is a phenomenal actor I'm not sure I can listen to her Scoaaatish accent for a whole film 😉

AltitudeCheck · 13/03/2026 23:17

I saw it twice at the cinema, once on my own and then took OH the second time because I thought it was really good and something everyone needs to see!

OnePearlHelper · 13/03/2026 23:20

It was such a great watch, I think it did what it set out to do and create awareness.

arethereanyleftatall · 13/03/2026 23:20

It is so good. So sad and I can empathise so completely for him. Horrible to have any kind of deviation from the ‘norm’ so little as just 50 years ago

It was a bit distracting but I forgave her as the rest was so good. Absolutely amazing.

I Googled for more information on the device - £500 and you can only pre order it now, that's taken so long to be on the market!

HopSpringsEternal · 14/03/2026 00:32

It was excellent. The dialogoue, acting, humour. The accent was a biy off but the expressions made up for it. Laughed and cried.
Brilliant. And such a wonderful human he is.

tinyprophet · 14/03/2026 00:32

I have never cried so much in the cinema, went on my own and it really got to me - it's an incredible film. Not sure I can watch it again but want to with DH.

Supersimkin7 · 14/03/2026 00:33

It’s desperately funny. He’s a hero.

MargotLovesTom · 14/03/2026 00:34

It's a very powerful film. I'd seen it before all the furore at the BAFTAs and it made me even more angry at the witch hunt which literally illustrated everything that the film was about, the devastating effect Tourettes has had on his life and how hard it is to keep putting one foot in front of the other when others will always condemn you for something beyond your control.

starray · 14/03/2026 00:38

Saw it at the cinema - fantastic film - it was gripping from start to finish and the whole furore at the BAFTAs was highly ironic considering that the film was exactly about the kind of thing that he experienced at the BAFTAs!

Witch hunt what did I miss?

Supersimkin7 · 14/03/2026 13:41

BAFTA/BBC screwed up. One of the guys with Tourette’s started verbal tic-ing when another group of other award-winners went on stage.

No one there noticed so the tic was broadcast - of course it was rude.

The Tourette’s guy was humiliated nationwide, mortified and did a public apology. Shouldn’t think the other guys relished the insult much either.

Have you been on Mars? 😆 He was absolutely slated, and even had the likes of Jamie Foxx wading in asserting that John Davidson meant what he said, ignoring the fact that he has uncontrollable verbal tics. It's all there if you look for it.

TokyoSushi · 14/03/2026 14:36

I watched it on a long journey this week - loved it!

chattyness · 14/03/2026 14:49

I thought it was brilliant , I have been following his story since the QED documentary back in the late 80's and I was looking forward to seeing it. We lived nearby Galashiels for a couple of years & have family still living there as it's where my husband grew up. I was hoping to see a bit of the Gala area again as I really liked living around there, but they didn't film it there sadly.
Don't get too hung up on the accents, my DH , his brothers and sister all grew up together, but their accents all sound different to me.

The latest update documentary is called I Swear I Can't Help It & is on Amazon prime just now as well if anyone is interested.

I watched the documentaries from the 1980s too and thought they were brilliant. The film not so much, although I did like that they kept in where John kept telling his dog to cross the road when it clearly wasn't safe. Fortunately the dog was sensible enough to ignore him!

Zapx · 14/03/2026 15:02

Sobbed most of the way through it. Amazing film.

CherryRipe1 · 14/03/2026 16:34

Fabulous, funny but very sad. I hope it raises more awareness.

Cheewowa · 14/03/2026 16:47

Is there much about cancer in it or just a little? My DM recently diagnosed so don’t want to watch with DD if it will be upsetting. Thanks.
