“Because we were too many” - Jude The Obscure

Horrific.

I've never been so shocked by a 19th century novel!

FcukTheDay · 14/11/2025 20:54

Of course Snape also

Lee Scoresby and Hester - His Dark Materials.
Actually Hester more than Lee, to be honest .

Oh yes. Poor poor Hester (and Lee of course, but mostly Hester). Now I'm upset all over again 😭

Granny Weatherwax

Lifelong massive Pratchett fan. I bought The Shepherd's Crown on the day it was published. It's still in the cellophane wrapper. I just can't bring myself to open it 😕

Andthatrightsoon · 14/11/2025 21:00

Colin Creevey 'He was tiny in death'.

Gutting.

Philandbill · 14/11/2025 21:05

The baby in “Under the Hawthorne Tree”. That book in general is so devastating

I still feel really sad whenever I think of that baby. Bridget.

Toby Wren in Doomwatch. You'd have to be pretty old (as am I) to know what the hell I'm talking about.

oh God yes - I was coming on to say that! It was the very first time in my experience that the hero did not turn out to be OK after the cliffhanger. Season 2 started and I hoped it would open with him emerging from the water, having jumped before the bomb went off.

Having said that - my mother always said she'd never seen me look so shocked as when the bomb went off.... She used to hide in the kitchen during most of doom watch, especially the super rats episode......

Tiffany Mitchell in EastEnders (ruined my New Year) and Barbara in Call the Midwife , I thought she was going to alright 😥

Eustacia Vye

I am loving the 'Hardyness' on this thread tonight. I agree - and without spoilers, the fact she wasn't alone. (One of the best endings to a book I have ever read.)

I think she is my favourite heroine of all time.

Ohmygodthepain · 14/11/2025 21:25

Will in the Good Wife.

James Bond

ET

Matthew in Downton Abbey

Big in SATC. I couldn't breathe watching that the first time round

Ye gods, I could do with a good cry, that's my weekend sorted 😭

LoyalGreenHam · 14/11/2025 21:28

Assumpta in Ballykissangel. Just when she and Father Peter were finally going to head off into the sunset together. I cried for days.

I think she is my favourite heroine of all time.

It's cold, dark and pissing down with rain so it makes sense that the Hardy people are out in force. Agree with you on both counts - she is a fascinating heroine.

Tortielady · 14/11/2025 21:35

Shireen from Game of Thrones TV. (I don't think the scene is in any of the books.) By the end, I would have had her parents and Melisandre torn apart by wild horses (though off-screen) and given a lifetime of upturned Lego at 7am to the writers. Completely unforgivable.

Edward Casaubon, Middlemarch. He's not a nice man or a decent husband. His sweet young wife deserves better. But he's lonely and sad and he dies not knowing how lucky he is to have her. Poor man.

Jacob Armitage, Children of the New Forest. He's a dear, good soul...and he's all those children have.

BeesTreesSeas · 14/11/2025 21:35

Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones
