I have just seen this and thought that it wasn’t as gothic as I had hoped and found some of the acting a little bit OTT and pantomime. I think some of the music didn’t fit. The costumers were great though.Overall it was enjoyable but nothing special.

I think Del Toro had to give Victor a bit of tragic backstory for a modern audience to be even faintly sympathetic to him. He's such a spoilt, entitled dickhead. Having him motivated by a desire to outdo his brute of a father was at least a reason for him to be so utterly insane.

This could have been a masterpiece if they'd edited down to around 90-100 mins. But because it was so long it definitely dragged for me and I was rapidly losing interest in the last hour. I loathe this fad of making 2 hours plus films.

I turned this off after an hour. Most disappointed. Thought it was awful.

I saw the same production last week. The acting was definitely over the top in the second half. Glad you liked the costumes at least.

1931 movie is the best one

Just watched it. Haven't read the book or seen other versions. I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected, it was visually stunning and found it unexpectedly touching.
