Someone is going to pop up on here and tell me he was a terrible person probably...but before I have my bubble burst, what was your favourite Robert Redford film?

He was such a beautiful man.

Out of Africa was just so romantic. I love Meryl as well.

The Candidate is meant to be good

mismomary · 19/09/2025 20:27

Oooooh I've never seen barefoot in the park. Next on my list.

Out of Africa for me

XelaM · 19/09/2025 20:55

Although I really disliked Mia Farrow in it, Robert Redford is the only real Great Gatsby

dudsville · 20/09/2025 08:46

I'm rarely touched by the passing of famous people, but I have have RR in mind these last few days. It feels like a real loss. I've loved his films, but one of my favorites was Our Souls at Night, because older folks are so under represented in film.

Id never heard of or seen The Natural before it was mentioned here so I watched it today. Can't say I loved it but he was very watchable and a good cast. I didn't think he had any chemistry with Glenn Close though.

Quite a strange film really I thought.

i didnt fancy the Natural
we have been trying to watch Spy Game, not much is available to see without paying
it is hard to watch but have almost finished

Before I knew he had died, I was scrolling posts on Facebook and a few people had started to make tributes and I thought it was an old photo of Richard and Judy.

The Last Castle is good.

The Last Castle is good.

is it?
i was a bit put off by the blurb

MyElatedUmberFinch · 21/09/2025 11:34

It really is but then I love prison films. Mark Ruffalo, James Gandolfini (Sopranos) and of course Robert Redford were all excellent.

I can't cope with Prison films. I dunno why. I loved Shawshank but won't rewatch it!

Butch and Sundance, favourite film of all time. Love them both

The Great Gatsby. I think his performance is underrated, possibly because the film is so beautiful to look at, the clothes, the cinematography. He's rich, he's gorgeous but there is something "hidden" and withheld in all his interactions (which of course there is) I find it quite subtle and actually difficult to achieve convincingly.

RR also seems to have been a thoroughly decent man who had quite a share of tragedy in his life which I didn't know about until this week.

PermanentTemporary · 21/09/2025 11:48

All the Presidents Men is my favourite film, we watched it this week as a tribute. He is astounding in it.

I love Sneakers as well. Another generous performance in an amazing cast.

pinkhousesarebest · 21/09/2025 11:59

I just read that he bought the horse from The Horse Whisperer and kept him to the end of his days ( unlike Kevin Costner who sent the horse he rode back to the abattoir at the end of filming ). He was a good man.

WaffleParty · 21/09/2025 12:09

Gorgeous man. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is my favourite ever film. All The Presidents Men is brilliant and The Horse Whisperer is better than the book.

Kiefer Sutherland did the same (bought his horse so it could have "a nice life") after Young Guns and he was very much a novice rider at the time.

Such things do speak very well of the people who do them, IMO.

The Way We Were. He’s was just divine in it even if Hubbell was an ass 😂

That is such a great film because it is very real. And because he is an arsehole and her desire for him so sad yet so believable. He is perfect in the part. So is she.

Costner really did that?

SodOffbacktoaibu · 21/09/2025 22:43

I just watched Sneakers. Aw, what fun. They don't make those kind of films anymore, do they? There's an innocence to them..what a cast, too. Lovely.

All the Presidents Men for me. I just think he's totally believable.

WeeGeeBored · 21/09/2025 19:52

Costner really did that?

Yes he did. The horse was taken from an abattoir specifically because it looked on its last legs and they wanted that for the film. And then, heartbreakingly was sent back. I have never been able to watch anything with him in it since.

Sneakers is one of my all time favourite films. What a cast, and they all looked like they were having so much fun, especially Redford and Poitier.
