Recommendations, please. Along the lines of "Drive Angry", "Re-Animator" or "The Evil Dead". Preferably with a supernatural element, rather than slasher films. Nothing of any artistic merit.

Thanks

Child’s play should fit the bill, I love Brad Dourif as Chucky, he has some great script, the first three are fine, as is usual they get steadily worse as the franchise continues but the original is great

ETA ABSOUTLEY no artistic merit 🤣

My all-time fav trashy horror is Theatre of Blood.

The other Stuart Gordon films (Re-Animator director) are well worth a watch. From Beyond is my fave, absolutely glorious set-pieces with supernatural psychosexual madness, but Castle Freak and Dagon are also fab and have Lovecraftian source material while still bringing the practical FX and trashy fun.

The first Phantasm is also entertainingly bonkers and Sleepaway Camp (free on Youtube) is CRACKERS - avoid spoilers if you're gonna watch it, the ending is quite the twist. Edited to add - Sleepaway Camp could be categorised as slasher but it's honestly so peculiar it transcends categorisation. There's a great How Did This Get Made? podcast ep about it if you wanna share the comedown.

If you like Evil Dead, try the Japanese film “House” from 1977. It must surely have inspired ED. I’m still not sure what I watched or how it got made. Completely bonkers.

I'm also a big fan of Troma films now and again. Trashier than trashy and a budget so low it’s barely there but tons of fun.

curious79 · 28/07/2025 19:04

Love Evil Dead! Presumably you've watched Army of Darkness.

Abigail is super trashy horror film - and good enough plot line

sarsaparillatree · 28/07/2025 19:09

Trashy but maybe nor horror enough...
Tremors
Stonehenge Apocalypse
Bad Taste (a Peter Jackson film long before Lord of the Rings) It's a very silly slasher film.

C.H.U.D. Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers
Is an absolute classic!

Invisablepanic · 28/07/2025 19:22

@pinkdelight Castle Freak! I watched it as a younger teen and it stayed with me ever since!

I bet - quite the influence at a formative age!

Anna and the Apocalypse (what part of a Christmas zombie musical is bad)
Tucker and Dale versus Evil (just hilarious)
Razor Blade Smile
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter (I honestly didn't make that up)

CalzoneOnLegs · 29/07/2025 18:55

@NebulouslyContemporaneous is that the film in which Vincent Price kills and cooks the much loved poodles and the owner eats them unwittingly ? I have a vague memory of that happening in a film.

CalzoneOnLegs · 29/07/2025 18:58

@Healdgreen ‘Frogs’ with Ray Milland is a campy, kitschy 1970’s ‘Horror’ 🤣

4.4 IMDb rating sums it up 🤣

Saucery · 29/07/2025 19:08

Black Sheep (2006). Special effects by Weta Workshop, gloriously batshit.

That's the chap. And Captain Mainwaring from Dads' Army has his head sawn off.

I know the OP didn't want slasher films, but this is a kind of Carry On Eviscerating slasher film, quite jolly.

CalzoneOnLegs · 29/07/2025 19:32

@NebulouslyContemporaneous 🤣🤣there will never be another Vincent Price, I need to watch this again. I confess to watching ‘The Devil Rides Out’ last week, ( I’m not hard to entertain )

JenniferBooth · 29/07/2025 19:52

The Legacy (witchcraft horror) Katharine Ross and Sam Elliot met on the film and are still together, Roger Daltrey is also in it

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/07/2025 19:54

Popcorn (1991), if you can find it - it's about a bunch of students holding a horror film festival and, well, you can guess the rest!

Completely wonderful suggestion! A big fan of Dr Phibes, too

Yokaiwatch · 29/07/2025 20:07

I don’t know if I’m really getting what you are looking for but I would recommend Club Dread.

Yokaiwatch · 29/07/2025 20:10

Actually I have totally went against what you are looking for!

I would suggest Mirrors for the supernatural element, however Club Dread is still pretty good for a trashy horror
