Just as I've put in the title!

Draw: Ralph Fiennes, Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster

Repel: Nicholas Cage, Tom Cruise, Meryl streep, Tom Hanks.

Back in the day I couldn't stand Kevin Costner. Anything with him in it, I'd run a mile. I suppose I feel the same now about Tom Cruise... it's the smuggery in his manner I can't cope with it. Was Cruise the star in The Matrix? Such a boring film. I stopped caring, Could not finish it. 5 levels beyond silly.

I would definitely want to start watching anything with Simon Pegg in it. I was very impressed by Matt Damon in an interview he gave, talking about how he decided which films to commit to. He said it always came down to who was the director. He also talked about having Imposter Syndrome. I'm sure Damon is in turkeys as well as hits, but I was so impressed by his thoughtfulness & professionalism, I'd always give his films a chance.

Repel: Olivia Colman and David Tennant, can’t take the gurning from either of them. Cameron Diaz
Draw: Kristin ST, Gilles Lelouche, Camille Cottin, Jean Dujardin, Cate Blanchett

FloraBotticelli · 04/06/2025 23:27

Draws - Toby Stephens, Colin Firth, Jude Law, Carey Mulligan, Andrew Scott

Repel - Olivia Coleman (she’s the same in everything), Keira Knightly (fancies herself too much), Amy Poehler (just don’t vibe with her humour), Bridesmaids/40yr old virgin type crowd (childish, not in a good way)

Oh god and Keira Knightly with her one facial expression that makes her look constipated. I tried to watch her version of Pride and Prejudice after loving the series with Colin Firth as a young teen. Still regret it 🤣

Agree! She totally wrecked that film.

ShesTheAlbatross · 04/06/2025 23:30

Repel - Olivia Coleman.

PomegranateVase · 04/06/2025 23:42

Repel:

Olivia Coleman
Benedict Cumberbatch
Tom Hiddleston
Imelda Staunton
Judy Dench
Emma Thompson
Julie Walters
Helena Bonham Carter
Will Ferrell
Matthew McConaughey
Owen Wilson
Ben Affleck
Jim Carey
Isla Fisher
Reese Witherspoon
Maya Rudolph
Tina Fey

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to avoid watching films with many of these actors in, and if I want to watch a British film I’m pretty much fucked as most British films feature at least one of the above British actors I’ve listed - usually a gang of them.

I don’t have any actors who draw me in to watch a film.

I think you've summarised exactly my views!

I can forgive Owen Wilson because of Zoolander but I don't think I've ever seen him in anything since. Same with some early Jim Carrey films but I'm not sure I've seen one since I was about 12.

The rest are tosspots. Matthew Mcconaughey in particular makes me nauseous 😬

SocksAndTheCity · 04/06/2025 23:54

Draw: David Dastmalchian, Christoph Walz

Repel: Stephen Graham (which is one reason I barely watch TV nowadays, since at one point he seemed to be in just about everything)

ChunkingDreamer · 04/06/2025 23:58

Tony Leung is the only actor where I’ll actively watch anything he’s in. Even got me watching my first and only Marvel film.

Too many repels to count, but the main ones would be Adam Sandler and Tom Cruise (although I do love Interview with the Vampire).

SocksAndTheCity · 05/06/2025 00:15

I forgot about Tony Leung@ChunkingDreamer ! I also sat through Shang Chi (and quite enjoyed it).

On the basis of that I'll add to my draws Michelle Yeoh and from her, Jamie Lee Curtis Smile

LeavesTrees · 05/06/2025 00:19

Draw - Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, Jim Carrey

repel - Nicholas Cage. I won’t even attempt to watch a film with him in it.

LostWirhoutYourLove · 05/06/2025 00:25

Only repel that xxx mes to mind immediately, is Steven Seagal.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 05/06/2025 00:32

Draw: Domhnall Gleeson, Daniel Kaluuya, Rafe Spall, Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Lawrence, Florence Pugh, Sam Rockwell, Gary Oldman, Jodie Foster, Toni Colette, Aisling Bea, Lupita Nyong’o, Sean Penn, Cillian Murphy, Danica McKellar, Jodie Comer, Stanley Tucci

Repel: Jared Leto, Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, anyone from The Hangover, Jack Black, Rebel Wilson, Kristen Bell, David Tennant, Chris Pratt, Melissa McCarthy, Keira Knightley, Daisy Ridley, Ryan Reynolds, Michael Caine, Tom Hardy, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson

oh it’s a long list…

doonaduvet · 05/06/2025 01:56

Draw - John Simms, Mark Rylance
Repel - Nicole Kidman

Mothership4two · 05/06/2025 02:08

I have a long list of favourite actors, but I wouldn't watch anything that they were in, especially not a badly reviewed film, with the possible exception of Cillian Murphy, who, apart from his obvious easiness on the eyes, tends to be in interesting films (or generally ones I would like).

I haven't watched a Nicolas Cage film since 2001 (deliberately)

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 05/06/2025 05:04

Another repels list.
The three main actors in HP
Eddie Izzard
Woody Allen
Eddie Redmayne
Hunter Schafer
Emma thingy, from the Crown

BlueEyedBogWitch · 05/06/2025 05:15

Draw: Mackenzie Crook, because the stuff he makes usually has a lovely message and gentle vibe.

Deterrent: Miriam Margolyes. The woman is an attention-seeking lout, and if she was working class, she wouldn’t get airtime. Also Stephen Fry (bloviating tosspot).

PermanentTemporary · 05/06/2025 05:19

Hmm, not sure I'd actively avoid anything purely due to the actor, but certainly I am suspicious of anything involving Olivia Colman and him out of the office, the guy who played Tim, also in Nativity - I just don't feel they let go of themselves enough and am faintly scared of both.

I will be extra keen to see things with Ralph Fiennes, Tom Holland, Mark Rylance and Michael Sheen in. When Tom H turned up in White Lotus it was like being given a present.

Have done a flip on Seth Rogen - used to avoid stuff with him in but after The Studio I would seek him out in the future.

PermanentTemporary · 05/06/2025 05:20

Tom Hollander not Tom Holland FGS.

Havvingaalaugh · 05/06/2025 05:24

I’m ancient which explains why I choose Clint Eastwood every day of the week. He’s made some brilliant films.

I love Reece Witherspoon.

Dustin Hoffman, an excellent actor and in my favourite film of all time The Graduate.

I don’t like Hugh Grant.

hattie43 · 05/06/2025 05:38

Drawn to Morgan Freeman , Denzil Washington .
Discourage , Jim Carey , Jason Statham , Jack Black

mustytrusty · 05/06/2025 07:01

Draws: Andrew Scott

Repulses: Keira Knightly, Neil Morrissey, James Nesbitt, Emma Stone

Edited

I also feel nauseous too watching several of the people on my list, and I think there is something very ‘off’ about Matthew McConnaughey.

I also forgot to add the following to my list, and I’m sure I have many more who I could add who repel me!

Ryan Reynolds
David Tennant
Amy Poehler

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 05/06/2025 08:29

Surely I can’t be alone in being repelled by Jared Leto. I had expected half the thread to name him 😂

MoistVonL · 05/06/2025 08:46

Draw - too many to list! Just a few - Carey Mulligan, Emily Blunt, Alison Janney, Annette Benning, Joan and John Cusack Brian Cox, J K Simmons, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and slightly embarrassingly, The Rock

Repel - Tom Cruise (treatment of his wives)
Vin Diesel (unless it’s just voice like Iron Giant or Groot)
Jason Statham (testosterone ridden nonsense)
Cillian Murphy (as Scarecrow in Batman he gave me the heebie jeebies and I can’t unsee that, whatever he’s in)
