This is what he said he wants to do this evening and he's asked me for suggestions but I can't think of any as he's already seen a lot of the obvious contenders such as The third Man, Some Like it Hot, Schindlers List, The Truman Show, The Big Lebowski and many many more.

What classics do you think a keen 18 year old should see?

My top film which is a masterpiece in every way is Lawrence of Arabia ( however it is rather long ) but the direction of David Lean and the acting of Peter O’Toole and the other supporting actors makes it one of the best films ever made.

Rebecca (the original black and white one)

Wow - loads to look up here, thanks all. He is keen on world cinema, especially French as he's doing it for A level- in fact, the film he studies is on that list!

Not a classic, not yet anyway but French language film, cracking cast (but niche so might be difficult to find on streaming):

“Juste la Fin du Monde”

Completely different genre- English language, WW2 classic, B&W, tends to make the room go dusty at times….available on YouTube:

”Twelve O’Clock High”
