This is what he said he wants to do this evening and he's asked me for suggestions but I can't think of any as he's already seen a lot of the obvious contenders such as The third Man, Some Like it Hot, Schindlers List, The Truman Show, The Big Lebowski and many many more.

What classics do you think a keen 18 year old should see?

Thanks all - he's gone for the Daniel Day Lewis Lincoln film but there are lots of ideas here for future viewing, as well as lots he has seen and enjoyed.

The original 39 Steps Hitchcock version is wonderful.

The Ladykilllers with Alec Guinness would be my absolute top pick.

The 39 Steps with Robert Donat was my first thought too!

Having similar aged DS I would say the list suggested by @TertiaryAdjunctofUnimatrix01 is very good and my DS has watched many of those. Favourite films watched more than once have been most of Stanley Kubrick, Beau Travail, La Haine, Solaris (original) and Stalker, most Bergman films. However recent world cinema Vermilligio, Seed of the Sacred Fig went down well with DS.
Recent indie stuff like The Holdovers have been watched twice too.

Happyinarcon · 05/04/2025 15:39

I really liked
Breaker Morant
Master and Commander
Empire of the Sun

Misery!

My all time favourite movie!

Zanzara · 05/04/2025 17:04

Jean de Florette

and the sequel

Manon des Sources

DH and I did an overnighter with both years ago, because we couldn't bear to stop half way. 😄

Mapletreelane · 05/04/2025 19:34

Silence of the Lambs. Absolutely stands the test of time.

rosegoldwatcher · 05/04/2025 19:43

French? I really loved Jean de Florette and its sequel Manon des Sources.

For fun - (but is it a classic?) - Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Back to The Future
Shawshank Redemption
Green Mile
Stand By Me
Truman Show
Taken

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 10/04/2025 20:21

My DS (15) has recently taken to doing this. 12 Angry Men went straight to number 2 on his list, behind Shawshank. Agree with tons already mentioned. What else...

Rocky Horror
Schindlers List
Breakfast Club
JFK
Deerhunter
Grave of the Fireflies

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 10/04/2025 20:24

Sorry, didn't register Schindler's List in your OP!
