It's one of the worst films I've ever seen.

I've not seen the stage show.

All the characters are horrible & one dimensional. Even the green one - she's the most likeable & developed character & they still managed to make her flat & boring.

They threw all the CGI possible at it and it left me feeling very empty. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Glinda is awful. Absolutely awful but we are meant to like her cause of all the rich blond & pink. Dreadful.

The costumes were fabulous though gotta hand them that. Probably an Oscar for costumes.

I feel empty & sad after seeing that film.

My daughters loved it. They now think I'm the worst.

Just back from the cinema. Loved it.

iridescentsnowflake · 23/11/2024 21:17

I haven’t seen the stage show but we loved the film! Like a pp we could have watched the next part straight away; I normally check my watch during films but didn’t check it once during this.

DD & I saw the trailer for Wicked last week when we were at the cinema for Paddington in Peru. We decided we'd like to go and see it but all our local cinemas within easy reach are only showing it for a few days and then it's being replaced by Moana 2. Paddington still remains in the listing for weeks and yet we're puzzled as to why Wicked only gets to be shown for less than a week before it's replaced. Even at the big multiscreen it will be gone. We can't get there this week and had thought it would still be on next weekend. Quite disappointed. Seems such a short release time. I thought it would be on most of December.

It will be in for weeks for sure. Cinemas only book films for 1 week at a time, every Monday for screenings starting on Friday. It's sold out all weekend at my local cinema and there is still the sing a long version to come later in December. I was a film booker at Odeon and Vue for 10 years.

RobinEllacotStrike · 23/11/2024 22:49

I'm very excited about Moana 2. ⛵️

Interesting. I looked at other cinemas further away and they're still listing it for longer but our local cinema is quite adamant that there will be no more screenings after the end of this week. It's a mystery.

Just seen it I loved it!! Very faithful to the stage show which I also love.
i thought Ariana Grande was brilliant. A perfect Glinda.
loved the effects, costumes, dancing, sets, fab. Would go again.

MrsSpencerCharnas · 24/11/2024 09:12

@DrivingThePlot Check again on Tues/Wed. Cinemas often only put the new film times for next weekend on the internet this early. I'd be very surprised if its not being shown somewhere next weekend. We saw Red One (Christmas film staring The Rock) the other week as we were worried it would disappear, but that was on for 3 weeks at my local.

@FitAt50 I used to work for a Vue for a good 5 years while doing A levels, Uni and as a second job in my early 20's. good times

Countrylife2002 · 24/11/2024 09:17

DD and I saw it last night and it’s one of the best films we’ve seen. You do have to be into musicals though as it doesn’t shy away from that! Absolutely beautiful, mesmerising film.

AHFBridport · 24/11/2024 09:19

Not going to see it, didn't like the musical and feel it would trigger my DD who is in recovery from an ED.

Countrylife2002 · 24/11/2024 09:22

The cinema was rammed too (got two of the last seats when I booked a week ago) and there was clapping at the end. I think it’s going to do well.

I haven’t seen any of the promotional stuff but I didn’t think Ariana looked exceptionally thin in it, just normal. So in the film itself I think she’s fine. And she doesn’t wear revealing clothes.

Countrylife2002 · 24/11/2024 09:28

I just asked dd who has seen the promotion and she said they’ve got thin since the film, and agreed they both look awful now.

Mine wanted to see it on the 6th when their granny is staying but it looks like it will go soon.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 24/11/2024 14:26

I am a HUGE fan of the stage show and soundtrack. I loved the film. I did say to DH if someone had never seen the show, and wasn't really a musical fan or Wizard of Oz fan, would this film even make sense.

He's seen the show with me but isn't a huge fan and he thought the film was great. He said he thought everyone would like it. Lol clearly he was wrong

I didn't know the story either. Was really looking forward to it.

Glinda is a nightmare. She only started being nice to Elphaba to gain access to the sorceress. Me me me me me.

The animal subplot just abandoned. I guess that will be developed more in Pt2 but I won't be going. Where is the goat? What about the lion cub?

The boyfriend irredeemably shallow.

All the students were awful.

The choreography was pretty good. Though I'm not a fan of the music.

Wicked can get in the bin with Les miserables.

I think you can guess about what the lion cub is but in the musical it's not a huge plot point really.

The film was fantastic. I've seen the stage show several times (first time with Kerry Ellis, who I am in love with). I was also obsessed with the Idina Menzel/Kristin Chenoweth soundtrack, and then Wicked in Rock with Brian May and Kerry Ellis (FULLY recommend this for everyone else btw!)

I was really worried that the film would be shite and pointless. It absolutely was not. I wouldn't change a thing. In fact I would have sat there and watched the second half straight after if I could.
AG was so much better than I could have hoped for, I knew nothing of CE and wow, and I was sceptical about JB but I was very wrong.

Ah you must be one of the early fans like my daughter and I. First saw it in 2007 in London and daughter fell in love with musical theatre and actually ended up at ArtsEd doing MT and one of her friends ended up playing Fiyero! ... We used to line up back stage to meet Kerry Ellis and saw it multiple times and met her multiple times. Years pass and daughter now a lawyer but loved the film this morning.

Just got back with dd, god I loved it!

Goatmumma · 24/11/2024 17:58

Hated the stage show.

Me to. We left before the end.

Goatmumma · 24/11/2024 17:58

too I mean.

LoudSnoringDog · 24/11/2024 18:05

Absolutely loved it.

Have seen the show on the west end and Broadway

Thought the film was fabulous

MrsScarecrow · 24/11/2024 18:08

Bored sick at the stage show. Most of the audience were up on their feet clapping, the Americans behind us were crying with emotion. Couldnt see what the fuss was about. Boring boring boring! Unfortunately I expect I'll have to take GDs to see it 😖

To be fair if your not a fan of Les Mis maybe musical just aren't for you.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 24/11/2024 18:26

I think the stage show depends on who you see. I saw it in about 15 years ago with Rachel Tucker and Louise Dearman, with Lee Mead as Fiyero. I didn't know knowing what it was going to be like (other than it was the story of the witches pre-Dorothy) and absolutely loved it.

When I went more recently, I thought it was looking a bit tired, and a lot of the humour early on has been lost because the pacing was out. The Fiyero was also struggling with the songs which didn't help. The sound was a bit dodgy as well. I think it could do with a month or so off to just to tighten it up and make it sparkle again.

I haven't seen the film yet, but have booked. I loved the look from the trailers, so hope there isn't too much CGI. I don't know why they didn't make it longer, but with an intermission and have the whole story (like The Sound of Music film). I think the exact musical on film would be a bit short on character development for some people, but a 3h40 film with a fifteen minute break would have worked in my opinion.

Snowsprinkles123 · 24/11/2024 19:03

I'm such a huge fan of Wicked and musical theatre. I saw the stage show over 15 years ago and loved it. I absolutely loved the film. I'm surprised others didn't like it. I love all the nods to the wizard of Oz. I thought Arianna Grande played Glinda so well! Cynthia was perfect as Elphba and the fact she did her own stunts whilst singing live is incredible.
Really can't wait for the second part although I don't think it with be as good as the first part.

Flibberteegibbet · 24/11/2024 19:31

I loved the show and wasn’t sure I’d like the film but absolutely loved that too! Good job we’re not all the same though isn’t it
