Your perfect movie/ musical song

I've been obsessed with Les Mis recently, really didn't like the film and in February saw the sky arts Lea Mis a concert.

Well I adored it and am going to see the arena tour (Alfie Boe 😍)
Well I've always loved a musical but Les Mis soundtracks have been on repeat on my Spotify. Then I was obviously Googling the cast and past performances.

So Lea Salonga is now one of my favourite Eponinnes (actually prefer Francess Ruffelle)

But as googling goes I realised Lea Salonga sang Jasmine in Aladdin probably common knowledge but I was born mid 80's so it was just a film to me

So listening again today I have decided that a whole new world as a song from a film has got to be technically perfect. The whimsy, Lea salonga's clarity the high notes the melody the duet, the placement in the film as two young people finding the world with each other, that young persons view of wonder without cynicism, perfection!

What else for you?

The first half finale from West Side Story - where they are all in different places singing about their plans for that night.

LightDrizzle · 30/09/2024 00:28

Pretty much all of Cabaret!

I love The Room Where It Happens from Hamilton.

Deliiciousllydifffident · 30/09/2024 00:36

Does The Graduate count? The sound track by Simon and Garfunkel is amazing and songs such as Mrs Robinson and Sounds of Silence are among my favourite songs ever.

The phantom of the opera and Roxanne from Moulin Rouge, I get goosebumps every time.

LardoBurrows · 30/09/2024 01:00

I agree with @LightDrizzle that pretty much every song in Cabaret is fantastic.

Also love Who Will Buy This Beautiful Morning and Feed the Birds from Mary Poppins film.

Climb every Mountain from The Sound of Music film.

Georges Guétary singing I'll Build a Staircase to Paradise in the film An American in Paris.

TossedSaladandSE · 30/09/2024 02:20

I'm going to have to re watch cabaret.

I've seen most of the musicals mentioned most on dvd but Phantom live in the west end

I think I like musical songs so much as your transported to a moment in a persons life you may know what's coming or what's come before but the way the music itself sets the mood and tone and then the vocals tell the story

Isn't 'Who will buy?' from Oliver! ?

AngharadM · 01/10/2024 22:59

Oliver!
Joseph and the amazing technicolour dreamcoat

Anything by Sondheim

Bedknobs and broomsticks, bobbing along and the songs the soldiers sing

My name is Tullulah

IsItMimi · 01/10/2024 23:01

Lea Salonga is also the voice of Milan - Reflection. And everything she sings in Miss Saigon (but especially The movie in my mind, Sun and moon, and I'd give my life for you)

Carrie Hope Fletcher singing Pulled from The Addams Family musical is another favourite.

She used to be mine from Waitress.

I'll stop now 😅

Craftysue · 01/10/2024 23:05

I love Wicked especially Defying Gravity
I'm looking forward to seeing the new film

PermanentTemporary · 01/10/2024 23:08

For a while I became obsessed (as he would say himself) with Seth Rudetsky videos on YouTube analysing musical theatre songs, particularly the barebones ones he did for the channel Brava. It couldn't be more basic, just him playing the song line by line and analysing how it works, but I 'discovered' lots of songs and even musicals that way.

So... I adore the paired songs Marry Me a Little and Being Alive from Company, especially the production on YouTube with Raul Esparza. And the song Opening Doors from Merrily We Roll Along, it's amazing.

Before that I fell for Agony from Into the Woods, it's so simple and beautiful but so clever as well.

Not from YouTube but I also love Defying Gravity from Wicked, it's such a sugar rush.

Hoolihan · 01/10/2024 23:12

I love lots of the songs mentioned here! More recently I think Show Yourself from Frozen 2 is so fabulous with its echoes of previous moments in the story and a real sense of character development.

Rizzo8 · 01/10/2024 23:13

I love Carousel and 'If you loved me'. Have a personal connection to it.

dixkybow · 01/10/2024 23:18

Lea Salonga for me too, but, Miss Saigon - the last night of the world

suki1964 · 01/10/2024 23:18

Dame Kiri and Jose Carraras - South Pacific

Barbara Dickson and Elaine Paige - I know him so well - Chess

Needanadultgapyear · 02/11/2024 08:20

I'd rather be me than be with you from Mean Girls a song for every geek girl who has been bullied by the mean girls.
Beautiful from Heathers sums up how honestly horrible senior school is for many people. I also love Just say No - a girls working out she doesn't need to shitty boyfriend.
Pretty Funny from Dog Fight.
Defying Gravity from wicked
Michael in the Bathroom from Be more chill.
Heart and Soul from We won't sleep
Seasons of Love from Rent - this is my funeral song.
Me and the Sky from Come From away. Also Welcome to the Rock - the line 'here we are at the start of a moment' resonants so much I will never forget where I was when I heard on the radio that a plane had hit the towers. The whole musical for me had so much power a very terrible thing happened and so many people died, but so many ordinary people did wonderful and kind things for others.
All these songs touch things that are personal to me and I feel strong emotions listening to them.

RabbitsRock · 02/11/2024 08:26

Rizzo8 I love that song too but it’s tinged with sadness for me - DF used to play it on the piano but he doesn’t play anymore as his hearing is too bad 😢

Mumdiva99 · 02/11/2024 08:27

Op if you like Lea then try Last Night of the World from Miss Saigon. Absolutely beautiful song.

RabbitsRock · 02/11/2024 08:29

So many to choose from! Definitely another vote for “ Defying Gravity”. I love “ Bring Him Home” from Les Mis.
