Your perfect movie/ musical song

I've been obsessed with Les Mis recently, really didn't like the film and in February saw the sky arts Lea Mis a concert.

Well I adored it and am going to see the arena tour (Alfie Boe 😍)
Well I've always loved a musical but Les Mis soundtracks have been on repeat on my Spotify. Then I was obviously Googling the cast and past performances.

So Lea Salonga is now one of my favourite Eponinnes (actually prefer Francess Ruffelle)

But as googling goes I realised Lea Salonga sang Jasmine in Aladdin probably common knowledge but I was born mid 80's so it was just a film to me

So listening again today I have decided that a whole new world as a song from a film has got to be technically perfect. The whimsy, Lea salonga's clarity the high notes the melody the duet, the placement in the film as two young people finding the world with each other, that young persons view of wonder without cynicism, perfection!

What else for you?

Lots of inspo for my next DVD to grab.
I wish I had easier access and funds for more live performances

I watched Oliver last night so currently loving as long as he needs me, just a shame Bill was such an undeserving subject of affection

I adore musicals. Singing in the Rain and Meet me in St Louis are two of my favourite movies. But for a single song it has to be ‘Losing my mind’ from Sondheim’s Follies, it has such heartbreak and longing in it.

If you like Lea Salonga then you must listen to Miss Saigon.

Folkwhore · 02/11/2024 10:44

Always come on to say Seasons of Love - Rent - absolute perfection

nomorehocuspocus · 02/11/2024 10:51

Welcome to the 60's from Hairspray.

Pretty much all of Cabaret!

I love The Room Where It Happens from Hamilton.

Spot on with these choices, tbh.

GiftWrappedSuburbanDreams · 02/11/2024 11:14

The Sound of Music is my favourite musical and I love all the songs from that.
As for a song from another musical, there's too many to choose from! But I do love Defying Gravity, Suddenly Seymour, Good Morning Baltimore to name a few.

In case you didn't know, lots of cinemas have 'event cinema' showings of stage musicals. Not quite the same but still good 😀

Doro371 · 02/11/2024 11:31

No musical or movie and probably very niche but I love "Which of the Pickwick Triplets did it" from "Only Murders in the Building" season 3 so much. Both the lyrics and the way Steve Martin performs. I try to master it when I'm alone in my car 😂

CrossPurposes · 02/11/2024 15:42

Secret Love by Doris Day from Calamity Jane. They used the first and only take.

Laalaalaand · 02/11/2024 15:52

Currently I'm loving

Burn from Hamilton.
Show yourself frozen 2
She used to be mine from waitress

I also adore the reprise in frozen in the ice Palace where Elsa and anna sing together. It was taken out of the stage show which i thought was a stupid decision.

TickingAlongNicely · 02/11/2024 15:54

When I used to be in a choir, one of my favourites was when did songs from Les Mis... they are just so powerful.

Otherwise...
Climb Every Mountain and Edelweiss
Slipping Through my Fingers (Mamma Mia)
Shimbleshanks and Memory (Cats)

DD is in Matilda (school, not West End) which is starting to grate a little on a few of the songs (as did We Will Rock You) last year but looking forward to it.

I was in a production of Oliver and spent the run wondering how/why the Bill/Nancy relationship was. There is almost no interaction between them in the show. No scenes of tender moments.
Nothing. I couldn't understand it.... still can't. (Although As long as he needs me is absolutely beautiful).

Spotify is your friend if you are short of funds. There are loads of show playlists to introduce you to new music too.

Biscuitsneeded · 03/11/2024 20:01

Oh gosh, where to start?

All the Wasted Time - Parade
Back to Before - Ragtime
If I Loved You - Carousel
Practically any song from The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Sunrise, Sunset - Fiddler on the Roof
Something Wonderful - The King and I
Burn - Hamilton

And actually, For Good from Wicked. Reminds me of a much missed friend.

BetteDavisChin · 03/11/2024 20:03

We Kiss in a Shadow from the King and I, about a forbidden love affair.

'To kiss in the sunlight,
And say to the world:
"Behold, and believe what you see.
Behold, how my lover loves me" '.

taxguru · 03/11/2024 20:09

The movie Grease and song from it, "You're the one that I want". Absolutely perfect feel-good movie for a rainy afternoon when you just want some simple entertainment without having to think. I must have watched it hundreds of times.

Isometimeswonder · 03/11/2024 20:12

Moulin Rouge (stageshow) is BRILLIANT

SocksAndTheCity · 03/11/2024 20:15

All of The Muppet Christmas Carol.

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 03/11/2024 20:30

Muppets Christmas Carol is one of my faves! I actually always get teary when Bob says, he's got a spot overlooking the park(?) same as Beth in little women when the pure, brave and young die and go valiantly but leave behind the ones they love.
Absolutely love the song 'wherever you find love, it feels like Christmas'

I've seen live
Phantom of the opera
Sound of music
Chicago
Dirty dancing
Full Monty
Matilda
Some ballets

Only phantom was in the west end

Very moved by Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard ( sadly haven’t seen it live). I particularly loved “ As If We Never Said Goodbye”

Dontlletmedownbruce · 05/11/2024 15:43

I dreamed a dream from Les Mis makes me want to sob, every single time. Its the perfect song, beautiful and emotive. On my own is my second favourite.

I loved last years Wonka movie!!

IsItMimi · 09/11/2024 21:05

Oh, and 'There's a fine fine line' from Avenue Q for a left field choice

BuzzieLittleBee · 10/11/2024 20:22

So many...

Cabaret and Tomorrow Belongs to Me - Cabaret (the latter is just chilling)

Stars, On My Own and One Day More - Les Mis

I could have danced all night and On the Street Where you Live - My Fair Lady

Tonight - West Side Story
