Please recommend to me some coming of age films that are beautiful to watch. Preferably romantic, slow and arty, and strongly atmospheric. Not quite sure how to describe what I mean, but some that I’ve seen already are Call Me By Your Name, My Summer Of Love, Stealing Beauty, Sex And Lucia, Amelie, Blue Is The Warmest Colour, Swimming Pool.

Not sure if boho fits but certainly beautiful and atmospheric:
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Moonlight

Frances Ha, Water Lilies, and 20th Century Women, as a pp said.

Shiva Baby? Palo Alto? Lost in Translation? Vicky Christina Barcelona?

(If you liked Call My By Your Name, try other Luca Guadagnino films -- A Bigger Splash focuses primarily on older characters, but is gorgeous looking and has Ralph Fiennes doing comedy, and a mute Tild Swinton wearing the most gorgeous clothes).

Maggie's Plan (another with Greta Gerwig)?

Following! I love the sound of these!

The half of it, on Netflix

I'm not sure it's beautiful as such but Booksmart is a wonderful coming of age movie.

Booksmart, Juno and Ladybird. Also, Girl, Interrupted (although that's darker).

Have you seen Betty Blue? I mean it's not very progressive and practically invented the manic pixie dream girl trope but I think it ticks your boxes.
I was about to rewatch it as we're about to redo our kitchen and I want to have a look at the interiors 😀

An Education

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret kinda fits the bill, I loved the 70s setting!

Not a film... but have you watched the tv adaptation of Normal People? That would fit the bill I think, it's beautiful.

I watched the first episode and didn't continue for some reason, even though I enjoyed it. I must revisit. It would definitely fit the bill.

@FinanceLPlates I haven't heard of either of these, but they look interesting.

@mewkins I love Girl, Interrupted. I need to find Booksmart and Juno.

@trainedopossum Yes, I have seen Betty Blue and I loved it so much that I watched it several times. It's very quirky! Very beautiful. I love the piano scene. (Heading over to Youtube now to watch the piano scene.)

I had no idea there was a film version of this. I used to love the book when I was young. We all read Judy Blume. Our parents thought it her books were suitable. Little did they know!

Yes it came out last year. Just need a film version of Forever now! 😉

Not sure if you saw OliveK's suggestion unthread but Before Sunrise fits the bill - featuring a young Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. Perfect film!

newname642 · 01/06/2024 23:12

have just seen it was made in 1995. No wonder they look so young!

You’ve probably seen it but American Beauty! And others have already said my favourites, Before Sunrise, Say Anything, Frances Ha.

I don’t know if it fits but my favourite coming of age type film is St Elmo’s Fire, an 80s film featuring most of the Brat Pack.

also not coming of age but feel like you’d enjoy Midnight in Paris.

Watched this in the cinema when it came out, I'm the same age as Ethan Hawke and I cannot express how much this series of films captures the experiences of our generation. Love them so much.

MissKittyFantastico84 · 05/06/2024 20:19

I was really surprised by Adventureland with Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenburg (sp?)

It's one of my top relaxing films to watch, funny, gentle, bit indie and really heartwarming.

Deffo fits the coming of age theme too. Very similar vibe to Juno.

westisbest1982 · 05/06/2024 20:24

Just remembered another really good coming of age film starring Jesse Eisenberg - The Squid and the Whale.

Also - What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
