Inspired by another thread, which films would you consider to have awful endings? Maybe didn't go the way you thought it should or had just a bit of a flat ending?

Mine is No Country For Old Men where the relentless killer (played brilliantly by Javier Bardem) eventually catches up with the main character's wife. She is pretty much an innocent bystander who's only 'crime' is to be married to a man that made a costly and stupid mistake. There is no real reason to kill her, but he does anyway. He tries to get her to say heads or tails beforehand, iimplying that she could have lived. The killer is then badly injured but still manages to get away and isn't caught by the very end.

In the book, one sister is very ill and gets all of the attention. The twist is that the healthy sister dies and the one everyone has been focussing on ends up being fine. In the film, the sister who is ill is the one who dies which completely obviates the whole point of the story for me.

The mist

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/05/2024 16:36

Titanic.
They should have just steered away from the iceberg and sailed on to New York. It would have been a much nicer ending and more credible.
Something like they showed would never happen in real life. Plus, they could have made another film called Titanic 2.

The mist

That ending destroyed me. So cruel.

🤣🤣

Yeah. Titanic 2 : where they sail from New York to the UK. Kate Winslet is on board, having had a face transplant with Michael MacIntyre in order to infiltrate a plot to destroy Saturday night TV.

I have never seen The Mist, so the ending is a mystery to me

Weren't there two versions, or am I misremembering? I saw the original. Yeah...rotten ending.

Passengers where Jennifer Lawrence chooses to live out the rest of her life on the spaceship with the git that woke her up in the first place!

The dog at the end of The Road. I think it's a very good, if very grim film, but having spent the entirety of it in a world where there is barely any food which is so desperate that people have resorted to slavery and cannabilism, to then have the boy rescued by a family with 2.2 children and A DOG just seemed a bit of an unrealistic twist to me. I could see that after such bleakness it had to have a hopeful ending, but a dog? What did the dog eat?

I don’t think she had much choice! AFAICR they couldn’t be put back into hibernation.

Totally agree with this! I was so confused watching this as I read the book first!

Mothership4two · 01/05/2024 18:21

I thought he had worked out a way to put her back to sleep but not him and she chose to stay with him @SiobhanSharpe? It's been a while since I watched it!

Edited

The only reason I remembered is that I remember posting on it too, and I thought it was the same thread so I wondered where my post had gone!

I couldn't imagine it had been deleted when nobody with eyes and a functioning cortex would argue that the monster at the end of Smile wasn't shit.

VincentVanGoth · 01/05/2024 22:09

One flew over the cuckoos nest.

that film upset me for years. I still get choked up about it now. I know it’s not a true story, but they really did use to do that to vulnerable people. I’ve only ever watched it the once can’t bring myself to watch it again.

fretaway · 01/05/2024 22:19

Vanilla Sky - it was all a dreeaaam!!!
Thus it turned into the biggest waste of time watching a film.

The Remains of the Day. What's with the pigeon? Nothing actually happens it just...peters out.

Mothership4two · 02/05/2024 08:16

I put One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest on the best endings thread! 😀I thought what happened to Jack Nicholson's character was quite the twist and very emotional. Then was glad the big 'silent' guy got away.

Prisoners, I hate not knowing if he gets rescued or not

RockyRogue1001 · 05/05/2024 22:14

I'm going to come across very, very old, but....

The film of the book Brighton Rock (starring a very young Dickie Attenborough) changes the ending significantly.
Presumably so as not to upset the Catholic church

LargeSquareRock · 05/05/2024 22:20

The Age of Innocence.

The most God-awful boring film of all time. Finally after suffering through the whole mind-numbing boringness, in the last scene, something mildly interesting looks like happening, but it doesn’t.
