I believe Edmond died. Quick Google and I can’t see this interpretation . The final scene is being described as a flash forward having been rescued . There is no indication Edmund was rescued . I interpreted it as seeing Edmunds last thoughts as he died. The scene was filmed in brighter colours , and his breath misting on the window as he fell asleep in the police car indicated to me his last breath .
Surely there cannot be a different interpretation that means Edmond lived.

I just finished this film. I’ve got more questions at the end than in the beginning. Who was the girl and why was nobody missing her? I don’t think Edmund is dead, but why was he being arrested? Why’s the police officer back on the case when he was pulled off it so quickly by the powers in London? Why all the shady looks at the outdoor leader? And why was a 7 year old even allowed in a cabin with another kid by a fast flowing river?? 😂

I started a thread after watching this.
I really did not get the ending.

I loved the scenery , but the actual story didn't make a lot of sense especially at the end.

I thought he was going to court for his trial (presumably for torturing the guy in the barn for information and anyone else he injured/killed)

Why was the Scottish policeman pulled off the search ? (I admit I didn't watch it that intently and did lose the plot a bit at times ! )

Ignoring the fact that it was an awful pile of tripe, I didn't think he died. I don't think the film was complex enough for a twist like that.

They never explained it. He gave the impression at the time that it was because of possibly some corruption or similar with all the cloak and dagger crap but they never explained it

Edmunds partner of 5 years who simply ditched him over the phone? The raid on their office?
why did the actors sign up to this film?

I read after I saw it that everyone had a script except James macavoy who had to improvise his way through. I wish I had known that. That’s why the plot is weak as macavoy actually needs to solve the mystery.

makes you wonder. He was talking to the mothers new partner then goes a fuck it I’ll beat the crap out of him now,

lots of it was nonsense like the chap who steals kids to order on a small Scottish island - and no one seems to have noticed.

When he used Frank's phone to ring the baddie why did they baddie say hello Frank if Frank wasn't involved?

Report
the80sweregreat · 27/02/2024 20:35

Did the dad say to the police that Frank was high or something? I thought he was involved at one stage as the men in the house all looked the same ; what I could make out anyway
( it was very dark )
(I think I just lost interest tbh or might need to rewatch it..)

Why did the new boyfriend have plans for a new house without a bedroom for the little boy?

Why would you think he died?? The ending isn't remotely complicated. He's going to jail for his attack on the guy who kidnapped the kids. The police officer refers to it.

It was pretty terrible & so dark it was hard to watch. The characters were completely unbelievable.

What did become of the boyfriend Frank ? Did they split up?
Claire Foy looked like she'd rather be acting in something else half the time too !

I was just sad at the thought of a 7 year old being sent off to a camp on his own. And for the kids to all be sleeping so close to water.

Are camps like this the norm ?
Seven did seem young , but I assumed they had adults around supervising them.

I liked it! The thread so far has made me laugh though, I share some of the questions. Our first impression was that he had died OP. But then we concluded that he had murdered the guy he tortured plus possibly some of the captors and that’s why the inspector had come to get him. He was saying to him hopefully he’d get off lightly. I think it’s plausible that it jumped to a later point once he was out of hospital - but then would police really wait that long to arrest him? 🤔 Yeah maybe dead is more plausible!!

Unlikely they’d get that past a risk assessment. I’d actually assumed initially that the son was older based on that cabin. It was only when they showed his photo on the missing poster, I was like, what???

I believe he died as the scene with drone was cut to after a close up of Edmund slumped over the wheel , then I’m sure the scene cut back to Edmund still slumped . The scene was played out in bright colour unlike the rest of the movie. It felt like it was Edmund dreaming / hoping for a happier ending than the one he was getting.

Edmund was dreaming he was with his son and wife again but he knew too he would be in deep trouble not only because of the violence toward the kidnappers ( he didn’t actually kill anyone ) but because he office had been raided , they had the Iraq files so while he was dying he knew all that was coming out and I think he was dreaming that in some way his sacrifice for his son may make up for all his wrong doings and make his don and people think less badly of him.

his office was raided because he handed over his phone to the police as part of the investigation. After that information reached London something changed but I never understood that twist .

Frank ? Another very loose end . Was he part of the racket ? It didn’t occur to me he was until someone pointed out up thread about his phone .

also I doubt kidnappers would keep child victims in that lodge for days . Another plot hole .

The policeman turned up at the end as Edmond asked his ex wife to call him and tell him about the lodge . But why the heck she didn’t call the police when she found the girl in the van and the injured kidnapper seems a massive plot hole.

the last scene is Edmund falling asleep in the police car and breathing one last time on the window . He wasn’t tired when he got in so that to me was his last thought as he passed away .
it felt a bit like the last scene of Inception in some ways. Deliberately vague .

i weirdly enjoyed it but I’m clearly overthinking the end . Thanks for your input tho’ . I just can’t see how we are suppose to believe he’s anything but dead.

I didn't notice the ending was brighter I just thought that they had filmed it on a bit of a sunnier day. By this point I was a bit fed up and lost the plot though !

Gosh OP, I feel like I maybe need to rewatch this, I clearly missed a lot 😂

I thought it was a pretty bad film but I was watching fairly distractedly while doing something else.

James McAvoy's character was so unsympathetic I just couldn't care what happened to him.
