Are there any really scary (but non-gory) films out? Bored out of my mind with Covid

We wanted Insidious - The Red Door last night and found it pretty scary, but we're out of ideas now. Seen the new Exorcist movie, seen the Nun 2. I'm on my third dose of Covid and feeling pretty feeble, so stuck in one place and really, really bored!

Any recommendations? I like to be scared witless, but don't like gore/blood/gunge

Mirrors with Keifer Sutherland

sprigatito · 12/02/2024 19:30

Is it good? It's got 15% on Rotten Tomatoes <dubious>

I really liked it, but then mirrors do actually creep me out in real life!!

catlovingdoctor · 12/02/2024 19:47

The Others, with Nicole Kidman

thedancingparrot · 12/02/2024 19:48

The grudge & the grudge 2

I love it, but have seen it too many times. Same goes for the Grudge films! I might give Mirrors a whirl then.

I'm not sure if its available on Netflix etc, but The Ring is very good.

Bsmirched · 12/02/2024 20:02

Mirrors is one of the worst films I have ever seen!

sprigatito · 12/02/2024 20:18

Oh mate, I said NOT gory! 2 minutes in and someone has already cut his own throat with a piece of broken glass 🤮

Ringu, the original Japanese version
Paranormal Activity
Halloween is brilliant and zero gore

FleaDog · 12/02/2024 20:22

Host is briliant.

The Wailing is v atmospheric

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 12/02/2024 20:26

The orphanage.

EasternStandard · 12/02/2024 20:27

I can’t do gore but maybe not scary enough I really enjoyed Get Out

I’m bad with too scary though

EasternStandard · 12/02/2024 20:28

Also really enjoyed The Mist film which is not recent

viktoria · 12/02/2024 20:29

Under the Shadow

ReadtheReviews · 12/02/2024 20:30

Nope

doubleshift · 12/02/2024 20:33

The woman in black

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 12/02/2024 20:37

Oh god, i’d forgotten being really freaked out by Paranormal Activity. I know people who are in to horror find it a bit dull, but i genuinely found it left me with the shivers about everyday things.

CatsLikeBoxes · 12/02/2024 20:44

I second Get Out - maybe more tense than scary exactly

CassTheFox · 12/02/2024 20:47

It Follows

Have you seen Quiet Place? That’s great.

Black Phone was pretty good too

Get well soon!

thedancingparrot · 12/02/2024 21:13

The fog (original with Jamie Lee Curtis)?

Baircasolly · 12/02/2024 21:18

Paranormal activity for sure.
I remember being properly petrified of Blair Witch (but I couldn't leave the cinema because I was underage, and I desperately didn't want to draw attention to the fact by leaving early like a big baby!) but I'm not sure if it's lost its edge now it's been parodied to death.

QuestionableMouse · 12/02/2024 21:21

I can't remember how gory 13 Ghosts is but I do remember it scared me! Ditto Ghost Ship.

The woman in black

Second vote for Woman in Black, and also Whistle and I'll Come to You.

TinkerTiger · 12/02/2024 21:25

@sprigatito do you recommend the new exorcist movie or the nun 2? I found the first nun scary but a terrible story, so not good in my books. Insidious red door is on my list.
