Are there any really scary (but non-gory) films out? Bored out of my mind with Covid

We wanted Insidious - The Red Door last night and found it pretty scary, but we're out of ideas now. Seen the new Exorcist movie, seen the Nun 2. I'm on my third dose of Covid and feeling pretty feeble, so stuck in one place and really, really bored!

Any recommendations? I like to be scared witless, but don't like gore/blood/gunge

The borderlands from 2013 is scary but not gory.😄

TinkerTiger · 12/02/2024 21:30

Sinister/Sinister 2? If you haven't already seen them. Also second Black phone, though I found it disturbing.

Autopsy of Jane Doe was surprisingly enjoyable.

The Ritual, though I didn't like the ending. Set in the woods and those types of films always terrify me.

In Fear. Simple British film with small cast set in a remote area of Ireland

It Follows

Have you seen Quiet Place? That’s great.

Black Phone was pretty good too

Get well soon!

I second It Follows!

Old one but The Exorcism of Emily Rose really freaked me out, also Mama (2013) was really good.

Forhecksake · 12/02/2024 21:39

Series instead of a film, but Haunting of Hill House on Netflix is great

Was just coming onto write that! Good but freaky film!

Dotellhimpike · 13/02/2024 00:26

Rosemary's Baby is not only really scary without being gory, it is maybe my all time favourite movie for lifestyle porn. Those incredible New York apartments and the 60s fashions !

Nitgel · 13/02/2024 07:58

Paperhouse is great so underrated. Director went on to do Candyman iirc.

Oh mate, I said NOT gory! 2 minutes in and someone has already cut his own throat with a piece of broken glass 🤮

Oh sorry! I want her it years ago and don't remember that at all. Also I'm not a fan of gore either so thought it would have been okay. Sorry!! 🙈

What about the conjuring films? I don't think I they have any gore!

Or something old school like 13 ghosts?

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 13/02/2024 08:56

QuestionableMouse · 12/02/2024 21:21

I can't remember how gory 13 Ghosts is but I do remember it scared me! Ditto Ghost Ship.

I love ghost ship but I remember a bit of gore. The scene where loads of people get chopped in half with a wire!

I remember watching this on channel 4 when I was about 11. I need to watch it again.

Doesn't Sinister have a gory lawn mower scene though? I might have hid behind a cushion, so can't remember whether it's actually gory or not!

I don't think you see much in the lawnmower scene. It's all implied

The orphanage.

Oh this is so good

afrikat · 13/02/2024 10:35

The Devil's Backbone is brilliant. Can't remember the gore level but don't think it's much

Oh gosh I don’t remember it’s been a while. But I don’t like gory films either so I assumed films that I enjoyed wouldn’t have any/much 🙈

doodlyfiddly · 13/02/2024 11:24

We watched The Pope's Exorcist on Sky the other day. It was quite good. Pretty creepy, but not gory. Supposed to be based on a real story.

Gunpowder · 13/02/2024 11:32

It must be 10 years old so you may have seen it but The Babadook is the scariest film I’ve seen. It’s on iPlayer atm.

Neveralonewithaclone · 19/04/2024 05:59

Speak no evil is excellent!!!! No gore just super tense.

Nonbio46 · 19/04/2024 20:19

Host is really scary. It’s less than an hour long but it’s really unsettling and scary.

QuickDraining · 19/04/2024 20:38

The Mist as mentioned above is on Channel 4 at the moment.

Sweat (subs), Border (subs) and Swallow, are all psychological horrors in their own way. All three captivated me.

QuickDraining · 19/04/2024 20:41

The BBC had the series Serpent, that is well and truly creepy. Think it's available on Netflix if you want to just lie there and binge the series.

StasisMom · 19/04/2024 20:51

It's been mentioned but another vote for Blair Witch, not at all gory but bloody terrifying...
