Would be good if they put Calamity Jane or 7 brides for 7 brothers on tv at Xmas instead of The Sound of Music AGAIN 🙄

apapuchi · 25/12/2023 21:40

Love this film. I used to watch it all the time with my mam when I was younger. She has quite advanced Alzheimer's now and I got her an easy-use music player for Xmas that you upload music on to. Lots of Calamity Jane on there so we have been Whip Cracking and crooning about the Black Hills of Dakota all day 😂🥰

I adore Doris Day, especially as Calam. And the barn raising in Seven Brides is brilliant. How about Kiss me Kate? Ann Miller singing Too Darn Hot is a joy!

I absolutely love Calamity Jane! I’m 42 and used to know all the songs by heart. Also loved seven brides for 7 brothers, which was one of my mum’s favourite films. Time to watch them again!

Mrstwiddle · 25/12/2023 22:09

I’m 45, also one of my favourites

It's so not a lesbian movie. 😂

My Dad always wanted to be Howard Keel. 😆

I’m with you here but (I’ve probably written this on the thread but here we go again) one day quite recently was like WAIT SBFSB is based on the Rape of the Sabine Women and this entire musical glorifies this and has a jolly musical about women crying as they’re physical dragged away from their home which then actually happens?! Oklahoma! Is another problematic one, there’s a whole song where someone’s just trying to persuade a man to top himself and a woman is basically just spending her entire life being slut-shamed.
I’m not denying they’re good fun for all the family if you don’t look too deeply but goodness me the amount that was acceptable as funny films for children is astonishing. Even something like the Wizard of Oz has someone squished with a house and after two seconds of Dorothy angsting we’re all singing and dancing about super cool! A person died!
Full disclosure, my favourite is Sweeney Todd. However that is out and proud about being basically a horror flick disguised as a musical (thinly disguised when it actually became a horror flick, nobody could sing properly really), all the main characters are obviously evil and meet horrific ends apart from the innocent ones and even they end up driven mad or corrupted and the music is FANTASTIC. It doesn’t come on advertised as child-friendly and ten minutes in we’ve already made fun of a fat person and probably casually killed off some others. You know going in knowing that it’s going to be something horrible because there’s literally demon in the title.

NatWestPigFamily · 14/01/2024 21:36

Oh absolutely agree with you about SBFSB’s. As a child I felt uncomfortable about the women being snatched away from their parents but as it all ends well it was ok. As an adult it hits differently. I used to think the guy pretending to be the cat was funny, but now it’s kidnapping and manipulating. I don’t blame the rocks in snowballs now!

Love it.
And Pillow Talk

Tezza1 · 22/01/2024 19:44

@SorrowsPrayers Love Doris Day. Love Howard Keel. Her comedies were great as well, but need to be taken in context I suppose, as they are perhaps very dated today.
Still, her costars! I mean Cary Grant!!! Rock Hudson!!!!
Her clothes were fabulous as well - Mrs Maisel standard. Mrs Maisel is my yardstick for clothes that make me drool.

SorrowsPrayers · 22/01/2024 19:48

@Tezza1 We are as one! I went to see Howard Keel in concert twice! Just adorable. He kept saying "I swear to God" throughout the concert. Magnificent!

Timeandtidy · 22/01/2024 20:01

My absolute favourite film. I recorded half from the to when I was 7 and watched it on repeat. It was pure joy when many years later I got to watch the whole film.

OliveK · 06/06/2024 23:15

Love it! And once attended a sing along screening at a cinema which was just a joy!

tiredofsettling · 06/06/2024 23:18

Loved it as an older kid and probably love it now ❤️❤️

Looks like there's a good touring version coming early 2025!
