Noooooo, it’s not on telly is it?

I’m out for the day!

flapjackfairy · 17/12/2023 18:55

my mother ( aged 84 )started the love for it and I have always adored it. And my 2 daughters ( aged 32 and 24 ) rank it as one of their v favourite movies. In fact oldest dd had a Calamity Jane themed party for her 21st birthday.
Howard Keel is definitely part of the attraction and we all love 7 brides for 7 brothers as well.

Christmassss · 17/12/2023 18:58

Just blown in from the windy city, me I love it.

mrboombasticwhy · 17/12/2023 18:59

No it's not on tv I just put it on randomly today

I actually haven't seen any other of her movies and I know she's a great actress but I don't love Doris day. I love calamity Jane the person

I love Calamity Jane & Doris Day Grin

SirChenjins · 17/12/2023 19:26

One of my all time favourite films! I used to watch it with my mum and sister when we were kids in the 70s and would sing along to it - happy memories. The bit where she takes off her cloak at the dance and Howard Keel does a double take is just lovely ☺️

mrboombasticwhy · 17/12/2023 19:33

I did ask another question which would appear no one has seen it?

Would u say calam is a tomboy or a cowgirl?

Tomboy

ArsenicInTheAppleTart · 17/12/2023 19:35

She was a sharpshooter

buidhe · 17/12/2023 19:36

I think she's a tomboy. I'm also a long time fan. It would change a fair bit if made today - mainly the depiction of native Americans. But it's pure nostalgia for me, one of,y top movies as a child in the 70s. Love the songs, love the character. Also think Calamity and Kate could have had a lovely life in that cabin!

thatone · 17/12/2023 19:38

I love the scene when they clean up her house.

weirdsibling · 17/12/2023 19:39

That used to be a favourite of me and my friend
Haven't thought about it for years !

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 17/12/2023 19:40

She’s both a tomboy and a cowgirl, and manages to be at least as sexy as Marilyn Monroe (I repeat, the TEETH on her). Excellent multitasker if you ask me.

She was a frontierswoman in RL and did various Wild West shows with Wild Bill Hickok. Apparently she was also a prostitute from time to time but let’s let that one go!

CornishPorsche · 17/12/2023 19:45

Calam is a tomboy. She lives in a very masculine world and didn't care for frills and frocks. Like most of us tomboys 😂.

She's a great character and I'm sure that after the wedding she went back to wearing shirts and trousers, just a bit cleaner than she was in the beginning!

Appleass · 17/12/2023 19:46

One of my favourites

LighthouseTheme · 17/12/2023 19:47

Love it! Love her - both as Calamity, and Doris the person. Also Howard Keel, and the other two main characters. For sure, it wouldn't fly today - but it was of it's time, and even then represented an earlier time.
I know all the songs back to front and sing the Deadwood Stage when riding the local hills (on my bike now, but years ago, I sang Secret Love whilst on a horse, just like Calam). I think she looks perfect when she is dressed for that scene, not too fancy, and certainly not too mannish.
I worked hotel reception maaaany years ago, and a group of people cam to stay who were not English. They spent quite some time trying to tell me who they though I resembled, and it was Doris Day!! (I wish) However, I also volunteered at an animal sanctuary where we had a very large pig named Doris, so when the nickname stuck, I was never quite sure which Doris I actually resembled.

Bristolnewcomer · 17/12/2023 19:50

I also think it’s a great lesbian love story that just goes a bit wrong at the end 😂

Honestly I dare you to rewatch this and not think the same https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b0W3Ih38QEg

applebee33 · 17/12/2023 19:54

I love it I'm 40! Loved it since I was a child I know it line for line Op

mindandsensespurified · 17/12/2023 20:07

One on my absolute favourites!

onlyconnect · 17/12/2023 20:08

I love it. Is there somewhere I can watch it for free?

PostmansKnock · 17/12/2023 20:50

I taught my dc to sing 'a woman's touch' and 'it's a hard knock life' when they tidied up. For my own entertainment.

JoanOgden · 17/12/2023 20:55

Calamity Jane is 100% a lesbian musical. The male love interests are incredibly dull and only there as a grudging acknowledgement of compulsory heterosexuality.

mrboombasticwhy · 17/12/2023 21:26

How is it a lesbian romance if she ends up married to bill and Katie to the lieutenant?

Growing up from a very young age we only had about 3 videos and one was calamity Jane which I fell in love with the film and used to pretend I was her.

When she is taking Katie to deadwood in the coach she climbs down to the inside from up top and I used to try and do that with my bunk beds lol.

Calamity is such a fiesty no nonsense woman who will only do as she wants and I feel I got a lot of those traits from watching the film over and over

Love Doris Day films but my go to at Christmas is always African Queen with Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn.
