YES! This was my take as well.

Katniss’ mother and grandmother surnames are both mentioned in the books and are not connected to Lucy Gray. There is a theory she could be related on the paternal side though.

Theory is Maude Ivory is Katniss grandma on her father's side. Maude can remember any song she hears, therefore she taught Katniss's father the hanging tree song, which he taught it to Katniss.

I personally loved it. I read then watched the original Hunger Games as they came out but haven't read The Ballad ... yet (definitely going to now!)

I really liked the characters and how it was more of a character study then focusing on the Games.

MASSIVE SPOILERS

When he saw the guns, he knew that if he got rid of them, that Lucy Gray was the only loose end that could reveal he was the one who murdered the Mayor's daughter. After he'd mentioned that he had killed 3, she knew he was responsible for Sejanus and she couldn't trust that he wouldn't kill her to keep his secret quiet. He didn't want the quiet life, he wanted to return to the Capitol and that was his chance.

SPOILER END
