I was so bored and was waiting for it to end. I was my invested in any of the characters and just waiting for it to end.

OP posts:

Have just watched it - I enjoyed it. I think having read the book recently helped with that. I found it interesting how the hunger games were very different - but it makes sense given this was 64 years before the hunger games we first met.

Fawbs89 · 21/11/2023 15:28

I thought it was a really good film!

Babymamamama · 21/11/2023 15:48

Ugh it was tedious for me. But I’m gen x and I see that as a very milennials genre.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/11/2023 16:10

I'm almost 50 and have always enjoyed dystopia/apocalyptic misery Grin

Rollercoaster1920 · 21/11/2023 16:16

It's a 12a isn't it? What's the consensus on suitability for a 10 year old who has read the book and it reasonably mature?

mizu · 21/11/2023 17:23

Grin me too re genre. I'm 50 and love films like this.

MirandaWest · 21/11/2023 18:26

I’m 48 😃

I took my 10 year old who has also read the book on Saturday and he enjoyed it, nothing too graphic but he had a number of bum as it was long!

So I saw it today and I'm uncertain on it. I would watch it again but I'd have it as 3rd out of the 5 films.

I liked seeing the additional world building and the hunger games " humble" beginnings before it grew, i liked seeing the behind the scenes stuff but felt that whilst i liked seeing it's humble beginnings it made it comparatively dull to the first two actual hunger games films but i guess that also illustrates why the people of the Capitol weren't watching until the pomp and ceremony of it all.

The after the games bit felt off, a bit disjointed and rushed which is weird as it's almost an hour of the film. Instead of steadily illustrating the story it felt like they took the main bullet points of the story and went scene to scene so it felt harsh and missed some of the subtleties of the book.

I'm so glad Peter Dinklage didn't have a death scene in Game of Thrones.

That death scene was very intresting! Sort of took away the seriousness of it!

My DD said book was better because you heard his inner voice. He wasn’t a nice man.
But she is a little in love with him, especially his blonde curls.

RunningFromInsanity · 28/11/2023 11:46

I enjoyed it. Really liked to see the hunger games humble beginnings.
Agree that the ending of Snow going from good to bad was very abrupt but that is true to the books.

It also makes me rethink back to Hunger Games and how grown up President Snow must have felt seeing Katniss do the bow, or sing Lucy Gray’s songs.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 28/11/2023 12:35

I've been reflecting on this and Tom Blythe obsessed DD has seen it twice more so constant discussion in our house and I think like another poster said while I enjoyed the backdrop and seeing how the games went from fairly basic beginnings to the spectacle in the earlier films, the writing didn't compel me to feel anything for the characters. Snow was never going be good but it was interesting seeing his origins.

But the other characters just left me unmoved

Plus being allergic to musicals is he songs just made me want to stab someone Confused

Fiftyvines · 28/11/2023 13:34

Terrible film. Way too long, too many songs (had no idea I was going to see a musical!). Main character's (Lucy) accent was unnecessary and poorly done. I was waiting to see 'Snow' turn, so to speak, is there another film due that covers this?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 28/11/2023 13:36

DD has seen a theory that in the later films the bleeding mouth problem Old Snow has is something to do with venom from the snake bite he gets in the woods

SoddingWeddings · 28/11/2023 13:57

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz has she read the books? There's an explanation in there - happy to put it here if you want!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 28/11/2023 15:56

Ooooh she's reading it now but I won't be so yes please, maybe with HUGE SPOILER WARNING KLAXON? If that would be ok OP? > don't want to start a bun fight <

RunningFromInsanity · 28/11/2023 17:57

I hate all musicals but didn’t think there was an excess amount of songs? It does have the word ‘ballad’ in the title so some singing is to be expected.

dovelynn · 28/11/2023 18:06

I actually really enjoyed it but haven't read the books or seen the other films in years. I did think it was horrifically violent though.

Is there any chance Lucy Gray was pregnant when she ran off and is katniss's mother/grandmother? (Not sure of the time line). Does 'the north' become district 13 in the future?

I guess so but when she was serenading the snakes there was a distinct Disney whiff about.

YES! This was my take as well.

SPOILER ABOUT SNOW AND THE BLOOD FROM HIS MOUTH IN THE ORIGINAL FILMS.

Snow spent his career poisoning those who disagreed with him or who were a threat to his ascension - look at the two he poisoned in the films, the Gamemaker and the General.

Finnick described how Snow had had to drink or eat from poisoned cups or food himself to avoid detection, but that not all antidotes could cure the effects. He grows the strongly scented roses that he wears to his hide the smell of blood on his breath.

I saw it with my teens last weekend…we all thought it was utterly confusing!!! And we’re not a thick bunch. How did they go from running away, holding hands to him trying to shoot her in the woods?!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 29/11/2023 15:16

Thanks Sodding! > winks theatrically >

I think this came over more so because it was so rushed too
