Who’s watching this? I think it’s going to have a massive opening week in the UK.

I’m so intrigued. At once a very subversive film, penned by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach; on another level, a film so heavily marketed that it seems to have entered the cultural mainstream. I wonder how it will straddle those tensions.

Can’t wait, already booked for Friday night. I’m taking my 19yo dd and my 11 yo, very flamboyant ds and he’s most excited of all of us. I imagine a lot of it will go over his head. The showings near us look very full already

WhatCameFirstTheChickenOrTheDickhead · 18/07/2023 10:29

I'm really looking forward to it and hoping it lives up to the hype, the marketing team have been doing overtime!

We are going Friday night and I think DP is actually more excited than I am...

Mouldyfoodhelp · 18/07/2023 20:38

It won't be a film i see opening week but I may see it. I don't know what to make of it. It feels like a film that will flop at the box office going by its trailer but I think the barbie/ Oppenheimer co marketing has worked in its favour more than Oppenheimers

Niftythrifter · 20/07/2023 17:34

I’ve got it booked and I am avoiding reviews as best as I can!

JaninaDuszejko · 20/07/2023 17:49

The marketing has been so clever that I (only had Sindy dolls) and my teenage DDs (only had Lottie dolls) all want to see it. Love Greta Gerwig, hope it's as good as the hype. If not I'll have to go home and watch Little Women and Lady Bird back to back to purge it from my memory.

YakChewCrumbs · 20/07/2023 17:51

I can't wait. Whole family including DH and adult DC are going on Saturday. DD is also going with her BF tomorrow and doing the Barbenheimer double. 😂

MirandaWest · 20/07/2023 17:52

17 year old DD and her friends are seeing it tomorrow afternoon to celebrate the end of school. They’ve had tickets booked for a while 😃

Nousername94 · 20/07/2023 19:21

It’s already nearly sold out at my local cinema for tomorrow!

EconomyClassRockstar · 21/07/2023 02:07

I just watched it and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! It's literally laugh out loud hilarious, a lot more intelligent than I was expecting and does a really good evaluation how both the matriarchy and the patriarchy suck...all while singing and dancing and wearing pink. It's entirely not what I was expecting but 10/10 from me.

EconomyClassRockstar · 21/07/2023 02:08

I also welled up a few times, which I wasn't expecting, but I have older kids and it touches on that too.

MachinesOfGod · 21/07/2023 02:36

Yes, I’m going tonight, really can’t wait!
My local (small town) cinema has 13 showings throughout the day and they’re all sold out 😮

nutmegnook · 21/07/2023 07:23

Hi, is this film ok for a 9 year old? I've heard it's a 12A.... my daughter is desperate to see it! Thanks xxxxx

golddustwomen · 21/07/2023 07:37

@nutmegnook ditto!

WhatCameFirstTheChickenOrTheDickhead · 21/07/2023 09:05

Oh I'm even more excited now!

There’s nothing that inappropriate in it, and she’ll enjoy the first 30 minutes, but a lot of the later themes might fly over her head and she’ll end up bored (anecdotally from other parents who took 10 years olds and younger)

I’m seeing it tomorrow night, I’m being Billynomates as no one will come with me. That’s just as well as my local Odeon has 14 showings a day this weekend and it was hard enough to find one seat (apart from in the 10.45pm showing) let alone two!

WeightInLine · 21/07/2023 12:25

I’m booked! We’re going tomorrow afternoon. I am so excited. It’s been ages since I’ve been to the cinema.

Not doing Barbenheimer as that would have been too expensive for all 6 of us, but I would definitely be doing it if it was just me and DH.

Yes, this was unexpected! That epic rant that America Ferreira has about how women are expected to be really touched a nerve with me re. stuff that I'm experiencing at the moment and made me quite emotional. I thought the way the film wove together different genres and emotions was really well done. And the gender politics aspect was pitched well, neither overbearing nor trivialised.

The final line was hilarious.

Same here. I absolutely loved it. My dd had to persuade me to go with her. Brilliant film. I would definitely recommend it.

There were lots of people on their own (including me) at the screening I went to.

Ponderingwindow · 21/07/2023 14:54

Not normally my thing, but we need an outing today and dd wasn’t interested in openheimmer so we are going. Dd pointed out we must wear pink. Turns out I have the perfect dress.

I took my 9yo along with my 13yo this morning and they both loved it. Some of it probably went over the wee ones head but it was bright and exciting enough that she wasn't bored or struggling.

Useruser0912 · 21/07/2023 15:01

I went this morning expecting it to be packed there was probably about 20 of us. Maybe because I went to the first showing at 11am perhaps the other ones will be busier. I didn't go to a big cinema either just a small one but was still really surprised how quiet it was. Really enjoyed it so did my 11 year old. In the first 10 minutes when it was all pink and Barbie land I felt guilty for not taking my 6 year old with us but as time went on I was glad I think she'd have probably got bored once the story line started.

AuntieMarys · 21/07/2023 16:45

Just been...loved it. Not for children at all!

ohsotired2022 · 21/07/2023 17:21

Went today.
Cinema practically empty.

Took my 9 year old and we both lived it.

Wasn't sure what to expect and really loved it.
Laughed and cried.
