Who’s watching this? I think it’s going to have a massive opening week in the UK.

I’m so intrigued. At once a very subversive film, penned by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach; on another level, a film so heavily marketed that it seems to have entered the cultural mainstream. I wonder how it will straddle those tensions.

I also saw this today and thought it was fab. I went with my two adult daughters and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Tormundsbeard · 21/07/2023 18:48

I liked it a lot. Especially America Ferrera.
Ryan Gosling is hilarious.

the film is a lot more meta than you’d expect.

Needmorelego · 21/07/2023 18:51

I saw it today. I laughed. I cried. I LOVED it.
I really want Ryan Gosling to win an Oscar. He was hilarious 🐴

QOD · 21/07/2023 19:55

Absolutely loved it. Went with dm 74 and dd 24 (me 54). All found it hilarious but dm 74 wanted to discuss the whole *riachy but dd and I just enjoyed the humour and didn’t care about any political agenda

KingofCats · 21/07/2023 20:00

Just dropped my DD(16) off and loved seeing everyone outside the cinema wearing pink. Lots of blokes in pink shirts. I’m going to see it with my nearly 10 year old on Sunday. Hope it’s not too old for her.

otherusername · 21/07/2023 20:11

My 8 year old loved it, I also loved it!

Yamaya · 21/07/2023 20:13

Would a 7 year old be too young for this?

Needmorelego · 21/07/2023 20:14

@Yamaya a lot would go over the head of a 7 year old.

Lovemusic33 · 21/07/2023 20:15

We are watching it tomorrow. DD’s friend works in a cinema and saw it last week, they have advised to take tissues 🤔.

Screamingabdabz · 21/07/2023 20:15

I can’t wait! The trailer looked amazing.

Bit despondent about the miseries already judging it without knowing anything about its feminist credentials. I suppose that mirrors life - blonde pretty female = vacuous and pathetic vs. Man who creates atomic bomb = worthy and intellectual.

FiftyNotNifty · 21/07/2023 20:51

Loved it!! I don't think this is a spoiler- but those who have seen it - did you think the old lady at the bus stop was significant? I have a theory!

I read online it was the creators daughter but then someone else said it's actually the costume designer and sounded pretty confident so I'm going with that 😂

I thought that encounter was to suggest that Barbie recognised in the older lady the beauty of having lived a “real” life, with its experiences and ups and downs.

Needmorelego · 21/07/2023 21:18

@FiftyNotNifty I looked it up - it was indeed the costume designer.

EconomyClassRockstar · 21/07/2023 02:07

I just watched it and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! It's literally laugh out loud hilarious, a lot more intelligent than I was expecting and does a really good evaluation how both the matriarchy and the patriarchy suck...all while singing and dancing and wearing pink. It's entirely not what I was expecting but 10/10 from me.

Would you take a 6 year old to it ?

JANFEBMAR23 · 21/07/2023 21:44

I wouldn't take a 6 year old.

I think it is aimed at adults personally. I think they will be bored and won't get a lot of what's going on.

PinkFrogss · 21/07/2023 21:48

Went to see Oppenheimer today and saw so many people dressed up for Barbie, wish I’d gone and seen that instead!

Needmorelego · 21/07/2023 21:48

@Skye85 I don’t think a 6 year old would understand it very much.
It’s not a children’s film.

Stopsnowing · 21/07/2023 21:53

Dd loved it and says I have to see it

catscalledbeanz · 21/07/2023 21:55

I LOVED it. Funny, visually spectacular, surprisingly moving and lightly politically driven. Nothing too in your face , the parody well placed and tongue in cheek. In addition Ryan Gosling has completely changed in my estimation! Few actors have the talent to pull off what he's done in this film. I thought it was brilliant. I don't think it's for all children - my daughters are older , but I know one would have loved it at 8 , whilst the other would have been bored.

Hi there, we're removing this because of concerns that it's a spoiler. (AND NOW WE'VE READ IT, hmmph)

That is very cool!
I wondered if it was Barbie herself, in the future!

HamHand · 21/07/2023 22:27

I loved it. My teens found it hilarious, my 11 year old started getting bored towards the end, and the last line, though fabulous, went right over his head. I was surprised how many parents were there with really quite little children. Many of whom left when they saw which way it was going with the many mentions of the patriarchy! I thought the marketing was brilliant, but also thought it had made it clear it wasn’t really a kids movie. I’ve seen lots of people saying they cried. I mainly felt vindicated over my feminist rants to my daughter over the last few years. It’ll be so good for many many women and girls to hear that monologue.

It is the "Barbara" on which the Barbie doll was based on. Or at least for the name. So yeah, Ruth Handler's daughter.

EllaView · 21/07/2023 22:31

I went with my 16 year old daughter today and we loved it. There were a couple of younger girls (8ish) in front of us who spent most of their time on their phones (!), chattering, back and forth to the loo and generally not engaged in the film. My favourite moment was when one of the girls asked their mum what a vagina was (when Barbie announced that she didn’t have one and Ken didn’t have a penis). I can only imagine the conversations on the way home!
