If you are fan of the show give it a swerve. I caught a little bit of Mark Kaermode’s review and he said it’s boring and I could not agree more. It’s like they took everything about Luther that made it a must watch and then highly sanitised it and what is left is just a run of the mill police show with a pantomime villain and a little bit of wanna be Bond thrown in. If they were going to go down the film route then they should have picked one of the better episodes and expanded it to make it for a film. Such a disappointment and poor use of good actors.

I thought the ending was to set him up as James Bond.

I didn't loveit like I loved the series.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 14/03/2023 13:21

I also found the villan distracting as I he reminded me of Pippa Haywood 🙈

There was a definite JB hint

Alice is probably the Boss

Ah man now you’ve cursed it and it won’t be

cushioncovers · 14/03/2023 13:32

It was ridiculously far fetched and they've left it so that they can do more but I wouldn't bother watching.

Dartmoorcheffy · 14/03/2023 13:34

Loved the series, not impressed with the film. Like almost every film these days it was filmed in low light settings, even in a hospital ward. Very gruesome and far fetched too.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 14/03/2023 13:39

I don't understand why they made a film rather than a series. A series would have been better. There was no depth to this film.

Inextremis · 14/03/2023 14:02

I watched it last night and thought it was OK - nothing amazing, but it passed the time and was quite enjoyable.

Couldn't stand the Alice story line

Me neither.
Utterly ridiculous. The Luther series ended up like some daft parody of every police procedural ever made. If the new thing has lost some of that crap I might have a look!

Paesano · 14/03/2023 14:15

It was ridiculous. It seems like he's not been given Bond so decided to turn himself into Bond on his own programme. They've trashed Luther. And it should definitely be an 18.

I thought it was good. Andy Serkis's "hair" was way too distracting though.

Definitely too much for a 15.

Haha, his hair made me laugh out loud! It's not just me then who thought it was too extreme to be a 15.

Niftythrifter · 15/03/2023 00:07

See I think Luther really did push some boundaries on terms of its time slot. I mean the clown killer and the surgeon and his wife. They were chilling in that they were not your atypical villain and were ‘ordinary’ people ( I am thinking of the surgeon and his wife) whose habits were hidden behind the very ordinary facade which to me is way more chilling than some pantomime villain type with some sick killings added for shock value and to make the viewer see him as a villain. I agree about missing Alice.

Not a patch on the series but as a huge Luther fan I quite enjoyed it. Agree it was far too gory for a 15 though, I had disturbed sleep afterwards. Storyline was a bit wtf though, I went to the loo and when I returned they were in Norway? Seemed like a bit of a weird unnecessary curve ball.

Childrenofthestones · 15/03/2023 07:21

"Luther’s always been far-fetched though, hasn’t it? I mean… in the TV show he was mates with a literal serial killer."

Not really when you consider how may were mates with a literal serial rapist

Pemba · 19/03/2023 02:51

I just watched it, after rewatching the final series to jog my memory. I was disappointed, the TV series was far more enjoyable, this dragged a bit.

And I agree that the subject matter was disturbing, I think the same about series like The Fall, they are great in a way, exciting and good acting but I think it's a bit sick really how we are supposed to get entertainment out of cruelty and twisted murders. They're so extreme, sometimes you wonder what is wrong with the writers. I'd be happy to have it toned down really.

I also thought Alice was missed and it was a pity that the only recurring characters from the series were Luther himself and his old boss. The snowy scenic villain's lair and the final Bond-ian scene were quite amusing though, plus the scene at the bar!

Lulu2171 · 19/03/2023 04:00

Loved the series. Film had less of the great storylines and way more of the horrific violence. Plus other than him no likeable characters. Two stars.

Karwomannghia · 19/03/2023 10:40

Enjoyed it but agree it is soooo far fetched and more like sci fi almost! I mean he must have huge sway to get the wardens to set up a prison riot that would have cost millions and caused deaths of other prisoners.
Definite hints to James Bond but he’s said he’s not doing it which I think is a real shame, so I think the water was saying I’m not JB.
i noticed that plastic sheeting was used a lot in the tv series to represent ‘scary place’ and in the film they went for torrential rain means ‘bad’. Still watched it all once I’d suspended my disbelief!

AnyaMarx · 19/03/2023 23:17

Well after watching g the film I decided to rewatch the series . From the first episode

Sadly no comparison. Series = excellent. And I loved his relationship with Ruth Wilsons character .

The film was utter rubbish. Shame .

Millicentmargaretamandaholden · 19/03/2023 23:41

I thought it was terrible. Poor Andy Serkis - I hope he was extremely well paid for such a naff role. Idris Elba is still impossibly handsome but not even that could save such it. Disappointing.

There weren’t even any iconic scares like the man under the bed, the man in the loft or the doctor stating evil intentions out loud. I think this was a bit more violent but without the tension.

The only thing I liked was the new recording of the theme tune.

Pemba · 20/03/2023 02:08

Who was that man's voice singing the theme song at the end? I tried to look on the credits but must have missed it. Could it have been Idris himself, does he sing?

I think I still prefer the version on the TV show, with the female voice.

We just watch it last night and loved it!

Yes, it was far-fetched at the end but it was an action film, not a TV series so was allowed to go a bit over the top. Definitely should have been an 18 though, not so much gory but got into your head.

I have no idea who played the villain but couldn't stand him and his weird weasel face 😖

lostinfusion · 22/03/2023 14:06

I have never seen Luther the series but watched this as have heard the series is good. Thought it was terrible & will certainly now not bother watching any of the episodes. Has probably saved me a fair amount of time in that respect

Pemba · 22/03/2023 14:06

Andy Serkis, look him up, he's a highly thought of actor. Does a lot of motion capture work, eg he was Gollum in Lord of the Rings, he was King Kong etc.

The script of this film let him down though, as it did Idris Elba. I wonder if was different writers from the TV series?

When we'd finished watching this on Netflix DP said 'thank goodness we didn't pay to see that' and I agree really.
