I enjoy off beat films, that make you think or surprise. Can be disturbing or not. Any recommendations?

Days of the Bagnold Summer
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
What we do in the shadows

My kids and I love Hunt for the Wilderpeople! It's hilarious, but also so emotional.

Greasy Strangler is a disturbing film to watch lol.

I cannot for the life of me last longer than about 10 minutes into that lol

@trythisforsize
Sweetie is a good shout.
Jane Campion? It must be over 30 years since I saw it, but remember Genevieve Lemon's performance even now.

Notsuchaniceguy · 10/02/2023 23:12

Saint Maud - creepy character study of religiosity and desire-
The Vvitch - scariest goat ever

For the Florence Pugh fans:
Midsommar
Lady Macbeth
The Wonder

Leave no trace (a truly wonderful film)
The Killing of a sacred deer

HyggeTygge · 10/02/2023 23:13

Spoorloos (the original "The Vanishing")
Nine Queens

Jane Campions Sweetie - yes. I remember being really fascinated by it in my late teens - 30 years ago, blimey that time went fast!

Delicatessen
The City of Lost Children
MicMacs
The Royal Tenenbaums
Scott Pilgrim vs the world
Big Fish
Dogma

I loved Micmacs. Would really like to see it again. Anyone know if it's available to stream anywhere?

Emsb2022 · 10/02/2023 23:56

Eraserhead - doesn't get much weirder than this...

Emsb2022 · 10/02/2023 23:57

...and pretty disturbing

trythisforsize · 11/02/2023 00:00

oh god Erasurehead is so so weird. In fact all Lynch films are spectacular and weird.

Also just remembered Naked Lunch

partystress · 11/02/2023 00:05

Dean Spanley. Especially if you are a dog lover.

Scarzo · 11/02/2023 00:09

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Seeyounextweek · 11/02/2023 00:40

Loved eraserhead , naked lunch & peanu butter falcon 💕
adding hedwig & the angry inch

LexMitior · 11/02/2023 00:43

I like Murder by Death - but fair to say that Peter Seller's performance is pretty dodgy by modern standards.

Time40 · 11/02/2023 00:48

Gallivant

IWonderWhyIBother · 11/02/2023 06:44

Thanks for this post I’m going to be quite busy looking into the suggestions. Thought of a couple of others
Cold Skin
The Skeleton Twins
Ich Bin Dein Mensch (I’m Your Man)

I don’t know anyone else that saw I’m Your Man

declutteringonedayatatime · 11/02/2023 07:57

My husband felt the same until he saw one ridiculously odd comedic part and he couldn't stop watching after that 🤣

declutteringonedayatatime · 11/02/2023 07:58

That reply was for @Calistan

XVGN · 11/02/2023 08:19

Another vote for Dogtooth (apparently available to stream on ITVX).

Also try Together (2000) Swedish commune film.

This site is great for identifying where to stream, rent or buy.

Harold and Maud
The Saddest Music in the World
The Nine Lives of Thomas Katz

Borka · 11/02/2023 08:28

Oh, also The 10,000 Fingers of Doctor T - it's a kids film, but wonderfully weird

queenrollo · 11/02/2023 08:33

Hedwig and The Angry Inch
Frank (2014 with Michael Fassbender)

evtheria · 11/02/2023 08:46

(Trying not to repeat films that have been mentioned)

Sedmikrasky
The Science of Sleep
T
The Colour of Pomegranates
Blowup
The Holy Mountain
Swiss Army Man
El Topo

I loved Everything Everywhere All At Once, if you haven't seen that.
The Menu is another odd horror film.

If you enjoy Koyaanisqatsi there are others (think it's a trilogy). Baraka and Chronos are similar movies to make you sit there and just be mindblown.
