Dirty dancing questions

I've just watched Dirty Dancing for the ten millionth time and it's one of the films I grew up watching over and over again and can quote it word for word. I don't really want to get into whether it's a good film or not. I think it was very forward thinking and yes, a little cheesy and yes, there was an age gap blah blah blah but that's not what my questions are.

Tonight I was wondering:

When Johnny drives off to She's like the Wind, do we think he knew then he was going to return for the final dance?

Also, in the big finale when he jumps down and all the other dancers join in... well are we supposed to think that was all spontaneous (I'm thinking like at the end of Grease) or are we supposed to think they all choreographed that ready for the final night?

As you can see, I have too much time on my hands but I've never thought about it before and I wondered if anyone else knew.

Would love to hear anyone else's thoughts. Smile

It's a musical. You're not supposed to think.

I am a big fan of musicals.

I wouldn't call it a musical at all. It's a movie with dancing in. Like Flashdance.

No one is singing plot points (I don't think generally people sing, it's just a corker of a soundtrack). In The Heights and The Sound Of Music are musicals, plot happens in song.

@theresaratinthekitchen if you have Netflix, season 1 of The Movies That Made Us features Dirty Dancing. It is a good watch. It includes their screen test and the other actors who were up for the parts. The makers thought it would be a complete flop!

Also he jumps off stage, walks towards his crew, goes onto his knees which end up dirty and then they are miraculously clean again for the group dance move toward the stage.

How many of us have tried The Lift? Dh and I did in a private swimming pool back when we were both far more capable than today. Ah good times.

@murderbythebook oh my God thank you ! I have been searching high and low for this and I am usually an expert googler.

@leafblowaway Yes I have watched that on Netflix and it was really interesting!

As for the lift, of course I have tried it but have never been successful. I did go to a birthday party once where the girl and her boyfriend and their friends recreated the final scene including the lift ... was amazing 🤩.

I've seen that deleted scene before. I think it's on my DVD. It's...weird!
They supposedly didn't get on very well. He was genuinely annoyed in that scene where they're rehearsing the dance and he runs his hand down her side and she keeps giggling, but they kept it in.
There's also an out take of the scene where they are rehearsing the lift in water and he says crossly to her "you're heavy when you're wet!"
I think he only got one shot at doing the leap off stage because of a knee injury.
I hate the way she stands on stage swishing her skirt around while he struts about dancing with his mates.
It's probably my favourite film. I can't believe PS died. 😪

I would never trust Dh to even attempt it with me!

dd on the other hand nails it when she has a good partner. She recently helped someone who was auditioning for the stage show to practise.

No. I think he leaves. Then later decides he should come back.

No. I don't think the dancing was organised, I think it was spontaneous.
