Dirty dancing questions

I've just watched Dirty Dancing for the ten millionth time and it's one of the films I grew up watching over and over again and can quote it word for word. I don't really want to get into whether it's a good film or not. I think it was very forward thinking and yes, a little cheesy and yes, there was an age gap blah blah blah but that's not what my questions are.

Tonight I was wondering:

When Johnny drives off to She's like the Wind, do we think he knew then he was going to return for the final dance?

Also, in the big finale when he jumps down and all the other dancers join in... well are we supposed to think that was all spontaneous (I'm thinking like at the end of Grease) or are we supposed to think they all choreographed that ready for the final night?

As you can see, I have too much time on my hands but I've never thought about it before and I wondered if anyone else knew.

Would love to hear anyone else's thoughts. Smile

I don't think the last scene was spontaneous or choreographed, but a bit of both. As in not planned but they are professionals so plan for everything. They obviously had a finale and just adapted it.

SamBeckettslastleap · 12/11/2022 23:57

And no, I don't think he knows he is going to return also have far too much time on my hands

SamBeckettslastleap · 12/11/2022 23:58

No idea what happened there!

WashAsDelicates · 13/11/2022 00:00

I always thought that the last scene was the way the staff danced when they were off duty and not constrained by the Kellermans' resort 'style'.

theresaratinthekitchen · 13/11/2022 00:05

Yes but at the end when he jumps off the stage and does his on his knees dance moves to the back, well when he gets there and turns around they all follow him and they all move in time together and do little funny head turns all at the same time.

Maybe I'm not supposed to think so hard about it. Smile

Actually I've just realised, when he walks in they are all surprised to see him so maybe we are supposed to believe it just all happened naturally.

They'd been working on the dance because Johnny gets excited about using it for the end of the season but then Neil tells him that he has to do the Pachanga.

theresaratinthekitchen · 13/11/2022 00:06

Ah I hadn't ever thought about them always having a finale every year that they adapted.

Yes that does make sense. Interesting.

God you lot are bigger fans than I am.

See when he tells Neil he's been working on something, I assumed he meant choreography for a final dance with him and Penny but yes it makes perfect sense that this was similar to what they'd been working on.

I am so glad I asked ! Grin

Yep the literally does the steps for it in that scene.

@GlitchStitch is right - you even see them practicing the moves in the background in a few scenes if you watch closely. A good excuse to watch it one more time Wink

I think I'm going to have to watch it again !

I think he didn't plan to come back. I remember being totally heartbroken in the cinema at that bit. I agree that he had choreographed the dance with the staff for the final night. The Dirty Dancing soundtrack was the first tape I got when I got my Walkman, I must have listened to it thousands of times.

Pivot22 · 13/11/2022 00:28

if you’ve not already seen this is brilliant;

Sound on!
theresaratinthekitchen · 13/11/2022 00:30

It has a fabulous soundtrack.

I remember I hadn't watched the film for a good few years as an adult and I was almost scared to watch it again in case I realised what a load of rubbish it was.

But no, I still love it. And now I have another reason to watch it again.

I reckon it was a premonition of the Thriller dance...

Oh my god don't ruin my favourite scene.

OP posts:
theresaratinthekitchen · 13/11/2022 00:34

Well that's what got me thinking because when I watched it tonight I thought of Thriller. Then thought that this one had to have been choreographed because they are all in time with each other.

Anyway what I really want to find now is that deleted scene. Anyone? Halo

GlitchStitch · 13/11/2022 00:38

I always feel sorry for Baby when he jumps off the stage and does his group dance. He just leaves her standing there on her own, after dragging her up there!

BrandyandGinger · 13/11/2022 00:43

I'm glad I was a teenager in the 80s. Cinema was so good then. And it was cheap enough to go every weekend if you wanted to.

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 13/11/2022 01:24

Yeah, he literally says there's some steps he's been working on with the staff and does a few of them then Neil shuts him down.
Also obsessed with it. You're not alone. Did you watch the Netflix documentary about it?

theresaratinthekitchen · 13/11/2022 01:26

Yeah I watched that not long ago. I hadn't seen it before and then I think someone recommended it on here.

I've been online searching for the deleted dry humping scene and it seems to have been deleted from everywhere ! Shame.

The girl to the left of him when they all dance down this aisle annoys me so much. Chewing away on her gum, and running her hands through her hair. I really dislike her 😂

Plump82 · 13/11/2022 12:05

*the aisle

It's a musical. You're not supposed to think.

I am a big fan of musicals.
