Wolf Creek

Me and dh watched Wolf Creek last week (we hadn't seen it and came across the DVD in a charity shop) and I honestly don't think I've ever been so affected by a film before. I thought the acting was very strong but found it incredibly difficult and heartbreaking to watch. It's definitely the saddest film I've ever seen- I think because it was based on a true story it has more of an affect on you. I felt awful for the two women- it was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime for them and they had their whole lives ahead of them. It really opened my eyes to the dangers of travelling (even in a group and not alone). I was just wondering if anyone else has seen it and if it affected them too x

It isn't based on a true story - that bit is added in for effect. It's cobbled together from missing backpacker type things but it is not a true story - categorically

And no it didn't affect me at all. It's almost verging on comedy isn't it? Mick is a comedy horror figure - and they really ham this up in the second one!

I wouldn't look too deeply into it as a film.. it's nonsense!

RiderOfTheBlue · 02/11/2022 19:21

Yeah it's not a true story as such, more inspired by several true stories. An amalgam of Milat, Murdoch and maybe others as well.

verabarbleen · 02/11/2022 19:25

I saw it when it first came out and a few times since it was scary! I never forget "head on a stick" usually Australian accents sounds very friendly and this is the first one that sounded menacing!

Loved Wolf Creek.

Eden Lake gave me the willies, you could easily see it happening in real life, apart from the ending, that was a bit too unbelievable.

Hostel and Saw are like horror comedies, gory as hell though.

I couldn’t watch “The Ring”. Not something I can kill 😜

MintyGreenDreams · 02/11/2022 19:30

I loved Wolf Creek i think Australians do Horrors very well. The Loved Ones is another shocking one too.

RedRiverShore2 · 02/11/2022 19:30

I haven't seen Eden Lake, I see it is on an Amazon Prime offshoot called Studiocanal with a free seven day trial so I might watch it.

GuyMontag · 02/11/2022 21:30

Eden Lake is really good. Much better characterisation than Wolf Creek.

I liked the first Saw - thought it was a truly fresh idea and it's good and visceral. Hostel was shit though. Just really lame, schlocky and nasty.

@Suzi888 omg I still remember the first time I watched Ringu, in that cheapo cinema in Leicester Square, Prince Charles is it? Jfc was completely wrung out by the end, we all were. Absolutely fantastic film making. Sent me on a Japan/South Korea horror trip that I've never got off.

Have you seen Onibaba? It is genuinely terrifying. Think a lot of the Asian horrors from the past 25 years are from that same tradition. Not gore or shocks, just utter head fucks. Love it. (Although gore and shocks have their place imo.)

RainbowZebraWarrior · 02/11/2022 21:36

This film, as was 'Hostel' were both played on a weekly film night while I was staying in a Hostel. In Australia. As a backpacker. Fucked up, both of them.

I saw "Wolf Creek" when it first came out and said to DH on the way out: That's film that hates women. By that I meant the directional choices.

Don't know how I'd feel if I saw it now.

Agree that Aussies do horror well, so if you have the stomach, watch "Snowtown". It's not simple gore and is very well-acted, with a compelling and horrible screen villain. Based on true events. My DH left the room.

MattDamon · 04/11/2022 09:25

I had the same reaction as most of you. Plus, I made the mistake of watching it alone. 😬

I stayed awake most of the night with every light in the house on!

Needhelp101 · 10/11/2022 11:58

Snowtown is the only film I have had to turn off halfway.
I was actually living in Adelaide when all the killings were happening.

Wolf Creek is extremely disturbing.

Oh I don't know. If you had the presence of mind to set about the damn thing with a baseball bat instead of being obediently killed i reckon you'd stand a chance!
