Wolf Creek

Me and dh watched Wolf Creek last week (we hadn't seen it and came across the DVD in a charity shop) and I honestly don't think I've ever been so affected by a film before. I thought the acting was very strong but found it incredibly difficult and heartbreaking to watch. It's definitely the saddest film I've ever seen- I think because it was based on a true story it has more of an affect on you. I felt awful for the two women- it was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime for them and they had their whole lives ahead of them. It really opened my eyes to the dangers of travelling (even in a group and not alone). I was just wondering if anyone else has seen it and if it affected them too x

The ending of Eden Lake is horrific. I like Shaun Dooley as an actor and have seen him in many things over the years but he was truly terrifying in this. I've seen all the Wolf Creek films and the two series.
I hadn't realised they were based on true events, surely they all can't be? I, too, feel so sorry for what Joanne Lees and poor Peter Falconio went through. Joanne must have been absolutely terrified and she is such a brave woman.

Whylurkwhenicanjoinin · 01/11/2022 21:17

Eden Lake for me is far more disturbing, can’t ever watch that again! Wolf Creek was shown in Oz because i saw it at the cinema there, its not true but “based on true events” ie crimes of various nutjobs who preyed on lone tourists

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 01/11/2022 21:34

Wolf Creek and Snowtown. Two Australian films I struggled to get through due to both being based on real life crimes and the chilling bleakness you experience on watching them. The Oz filmmakers do this kind of harrowing, hellish storytelling really well, but I never want to ever see either movie ever again.

There's a scene that's indelibly seared on my brain. It's such a harrowing film.

I know exactly which scene you mean. I just can't.

Tshirtdressandflipflops · 01/11/2022 21:01

@peoplearepeople I haven't seen Eden Lake. It was always one I meant to watch but everyone I know that's seen it has said it's too harrowing.

Honestly, don't. It will haunt you for ever more.

NeverOneBiscuit · 01/11/2022 21:41

Couldn’t watch to the end, far too upsetting. Even just seeing a trailer for it now makes me feel uneasy. I rarely watch horror films and certainly wish I’d never watched this one. The lead actor was also too convincing.

cofeetablebook · 01/11/2022 21:42

I didn't think it was that bad. Was never banned in Australia and is so loosely based on real events as to be 99% fantasy.

Tshirtdressandflipflops · 01/11/2022 22:16

@ComeOnThenFanny I don't think I could watch Eden Lake now. I'm not sure I'll ever watch another horror film after Wolf Creek, it's unsettled me too much

Hereditary is the scariest film I have seen recently.I love horror movies and I haven’t been able to watch it a second time.

Nateismine · 01/11/2022 20:39

It's the one and only film I wish I'd never watched. I saw it over 10 years ago and still have nightmares about it regularly. I now avoid all torture porn movies.

I saw it years ago too, it was fucking awful!

@CurlsandSwirls that sounds absolutely terrifying.

Don’t watch “The Girl in the Box” then on paramount. Fucking horrendous. And totally based on a true story (unlike Wolf Creek which is a mashed up version of several real life events). Google kidnapping of Colleen Stan.

It is a horrific film, agreed. But it's a bit of a stretch to say it opened your eyes to the dangers of traveling. The likelihood of something like that happening are infinitesimally small (and you could as likely stumble across a psycho like that on your home turf)

GoodnightGentleBoris · 02/11/2022 08:59

The Hills Have Eyes did it for me, there’s one scene where they set fire to the dad tied to a tree which is absolutely horrendous

Naimee87 · 02/11/2022 09:11

Oh yes i remember this film. Went to the cinema with a friend, didnt know anything about it whatsoever and left mid way through feeling so sick. I cannot stand horror and since seeing even just half of that film have never ever watched a horror film ever again. I think the Saw series must equally be as bad not that i have seen any but i just dont think horror/gore is or should be a form of entertainment its so wrong. Younger and younger generations are gaining access to seriously scary films too and i just cannot imagine what the affects will be on them later in life. I know i sound incredibly dramatic but i have such strong views on horror as a form of entertainment. I think given Wolf Creek was based on real events then i suppose it will hopefully make some people aware of the dangers of travelling. Hope you manage to recover.

WarmWinterSun · 02/11/2022 09:19

This film upset me as I felt it was wrong - watching women get tortured is not a healthy form of entertainment.

WarmWinterSun · 02/11/2022 09:23

I also had a crazy driver with passengers try to attack me and my friends when driving up the east coast of Australia. Bottle smashed, walking towards us, we jumped into our car, they jumped into their car and followed us for several kilometres. It was scary. Wolf Creek felt close to home as it captured a darker side

GuyMontag · 02/11/2022 09:26

I thought it was quite clever the way it semi-referenced a couple of news stories that had by that time become cultural boogeyman touchpoints in their own right.

But ultimately I guess that was quite cynical on the part of film makers who probably knew that it would morph into "omg it's based on a true story" when it really isn't.

Also the last half hour the killer is almost like a caricature. Just couldn't take it seriously.

The first half is good though.

Ivyonafence · 01/11/2022 20:58

Oh lord, I saw this when it came out and have regretted it ever since.

Incredibly well made and well acted but horrific. It felt so realistic whereas a lot of other horror/gore feels campier.

The guy who plays the killer is an abusive prick in real life. I think he's been charged with domestic violence and can't get work now.

He was acquitted of rape. Filming for Wolf Creek 3 I believe.

RedRiverShore2 · 02/11/2022 19:07

There are also two series with the same actor in it, I preferred them to the films

Jifmicroliquid · 02/11/2022 19:12

Eden Lake is a horribly bleak but absolutely fantastic film that was basically a response to David Cameron’s ‘hug a hoodie’ speech.
The scene with the little boy is horrendous.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/11/2022 19:13

I saw this years ago and the memories still upset me. Don't ever watch hostel or a Serbian film. It's called that and it's the most disturbing film I've ever seen.

Porridgeislife · 02/11/2022 19:16

I’ve only ever watched half of it. I turned it off at one particular scene where he was inflicting the kind of injury Ivan Milat did to his victims.

No desire to ever see it again. It definitely wasn’t ever banned in Australia though.
