I adore the Dark Materials trilogy and I am worried the film can't do it justice. But the trailer looks fab and I can't wait to see it...

trailer here and you can find out which your daemon would be

No I am not going

love the book too much and can't cope with the potential disappointment

fullmoonfiend · 17/11/2007 13:16

go find your daemon franny - it's interesting. DH's is a hare, mine is a racoon and ds1's is a terrier...spookily accurate for him!

We aren't going to the film. We've enjoyed the books and feel sure that the films will not do them justice. It's nice sometimes to leave the imagination untrammelled by a market-dominated simulacrum of it.

I'm dreading the merchandising: little armoured bears in plastic packaging.

Flame · 17/11/2007 13:26

I have to go, but I am trying to see it like with HP - it is just a film - it is not my beloved book.

dustystar · 17/11/2007 13:28

Same here Flame

My daemon is a chimpanzee

sfxmum · 17/11/2007 13:29

am actually too scared they are going to spoil it rather badly

Flame · 17/11/2007 13:32

Mine is a Loofah called Andreas

pinkteddy · 17/11/2007 14:49

I love the books. Trailer does look great - I have to see the film now!

pointydog · 17/11/2007 14:56

yep. looking forward to it

serenity · 17/11/2007 15:10

I have some reservations, but on the whole I'm really looking forward to it

christywhisty · 19/11/2007 17:40

Not over keen on the books. I read the first 2 but really couldn't be bothered with the 3rd, I think DC's would enjoy the film so will probably take them to see it.

I am SOOO looking forward to it. i suppose you just have to forget the books a little and see the film as a completely different experience; i don't think it could ever measure up to the books but it may be a film worth seeing!

Only thing annoying me so far is that I REALLY didn't see Lord Asriel as anything like Daniel Craig....

Threadworm · 19/11/2007 18:12

Blimey, Daniel Craig, eh?

My Lord Asriel is something more along the lines of Lawrence Olivier. Actually, because one of the early descriptions of him has him sitting with an ankle crossed over the other leg, all I can really see is his ankle, and a sharply pressed trouser leg. But it is definitely a Lawrence Olivier-style ankle.

SoupDragon · 19/11/2007 18:14

The stage version a few years back was fab.

SoupDragon · 19/11/2007 18:23

My daemon is, apparently a spider. No it f-ing well isn't, I can assure you of that. [shudder]

sfxmum · 19/11/2007 18:27

I have a wildcat called Leonidas

I think the preferred actor to play Lord Asriel, by PP was Jason Isaacks

MrsWeasley · 19/11/2007 18:34

My daemon is a mouse called Alvin.

MrsTweedy · 19/11/2007 19:29

Hmmm in the stage version Lord Asriel was Timothy Dalton and Mrs Coulter was Patricia Hodge. Really don't like the casting of Nicole Kidman. And why do they have to change the bloody name of the first story & use the American title?

gladbag · 19/11/2007 19:47

I'm so excited about the film. I loved the books - read all 3 in a couple of weeks, and although I'm sure the film is going to disappoint on various levels I still think it's going to be a visual feast.

And I have a crow daemon called Eamon (which is fine, except that the only Eamon I know is that awful awful Holmes man and it reminds me of him....)

Mamamoor · 19/11/2007 20:05

Would like to see the film but probably won't get round to it. Loved the books but the films will probably not do them justice however hard they try! Special effects can only go so far with this type of book.
My daemon is a mouse called Thalius!!! Hmmmm!

Koshka · 19/11/2007 20:13

My daemon is a Jackal called Aesop...
My mum and I are also in the same situation, worried about the film ruining the book, as it always does. Is this just the 1st book? I heard they were doing all three in one film

southeastastra · 19/11/2007 20:16

isn't kate bush doing a song for it?

BellaBear · 19/11/2007 20:17

Mine is a mouse called Myron

Dh's is an osprey called Elpis.

Bluestocking · 19/11/2007 20:23

My daemon is a dog called Thalius - a big dog, not a terrier! I was a bit puzzled by the title too - I assume it's actually Northern Lights? I will go and see the film but I think it's important to remember, as Flame says, that it's just a film.
