I adore the Dark Materials trilogy and I am worried the film can't do it justice. But the trailer looks fab and I can't wait to see it...

trailer here and you can find out which your daemon would be

I have an Ocelot named Rasthmus.

I may go and see the film but will attempt to reserve judgement unitl I do. I adore those books so much and grew up with them (go the first one in year 7 at school and waited very impatiently for the next ones, the last one came out when I was in 6th form). Some of the casting seems wrong to me but I suppose I must be good and wait unti lI see them in the parts properly to know.

LazyLinePainterJane · 19/11/2007 20:25

I worry that if I see the film, I will never be able to read the books again and I have just bought the lovely special edition ones.

fullmoonfiend · 19/11/2007 20:27

MrsW! Alvin??

I am also of the opinion that it will be a visual feast...
And I will try and not get upset if it is vcery different from the books.
My ds1 is dyslexic and does not really get reading fiction for pleasure. But we have often found that if a film caputres him, he will try and read the book. (and then ends up appreciating the book more than the film...)
So from that point of view, I am excited about going to see it.

Bella bear, mine is a crow called Myron!

Im going to have to reread the book before I see this, as it doesnt look anything like I imagined it would, apart from the bears.

LyraSilvertongue · 19/11/2007 21:48

The trailer looks fantastic. I've been waiting for this film for at least a year. I'm going to try to see it on the first night.

LyraSilvertongue · 19/11/2007 21:49

Philip Pullman says on his website that they've stayed very true to the books and he was consulted throughout although he didn't interfere. He was also very pleased with the casting.

BellaBear · 20/11/2007 18:24

Fubsy, we are obviously very similar people!

MrsBadger · 21/11/2007 17:39

oh franny I hear you
but I have just seen the trailer and am afraid I will go anyway
(but first I will write how I imagined it all before the film overwrites my mental images)

Threadworm · 27/11/2007 20:16

Read somewhere that the film tones down (or out) the anti-religious aspect.

Given that is it the most boldly anti-religious, humanist children's story I have ever read, I am wondering how they will manage this

LyraSilvertongue · 29/11/2007 18:15

Hmm, just seen another trailer which makes out the film is all about 'the quest for the golden compass'. Now this worries me because it's not what the book is about at all, it's about Lyra trying to rescue her friend Roger who's been taken 'north' by the baddies who want to separate children from their daemons. iirc no-one even knows Lyra has the alethiometer till The Subtle Knife. Or am I wrong about that? (it's been a while since I read it).

MrsBadger · 29/11/2007 18:30

well Lyra thinks the Master of Jordan gave her the alethiometer to take to Lord Asriel and is nonplussed when he says he doesn't need it

so maybe we start off as in the dark as Lyra about the whole thing?

I know nothing about the books, but have seen the trailers and it looks great although I'm confused about what certificate it'll be - says tbc.

Have no idea what you're all talking about regarding deamons.

MrsBadger · 29/11/2007 18:40

they are sort of ethereal companions that embody an aspect of your personality

DH and I def want to go - any clues what age kids its appropriate for (DD 8, def too young to read book yet.)

DC not how I imagined Asriel. Actually I though t he should look like Prof Sir Tom Blundell, only 25 years younger. If anyone knows who he is...

EmsMum · 29/11/2007 19:18

I got a sodding gibbon.

rosmerta · 29/11/2007 19:31

I am going to see the film but am hoping they haven't ruined it!! Love the books, so much better than HP.

My daemon is Callum the Fox

Hmm not sure I am really a Crow, but there we go. Nice web-site I didn't like that second trailer either, as Lyra has the compass at pretty much the beginning of the book I can't see how it's a "quest" story. But maybe that's just to sucker in a bigger audience. I think that I'll see it if the certificate is OK (I'm guessing it will be a 12A) but I am quite wary.
