Favourite old classics?

DD16 and I have been watching the odd movie together (loved the chance to spend time with her!) and she really enjoyed Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Singing in the Rain.

Obviously lots of outdated stereotypes in these films that's she's more than aware of but she loved the music, fashions, comedy and wonderful dancing.

Any favourite old movies that we could add to our list? Smile

Oh my gosh this is great! Thank you!
She really loved the glitz & glamour of the old MGM musicals. The costumes and sets, back before CGI.
I was a HUGE fan as a kid, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers was a favourite (the barn building scene!) and West Side Story. I remember I loved Anita.

I also loved Thoroughly Modern Millie but that one really hasn't aged well at ALL.

More modern era but she also loved Moonstruck with Cher. Dirty Dancing next on the list & then we'll dive into these suggestions.

Thanks again!! Lots of films I've heard of but had forgotten about!

I loved the 80s films but Pretty in Pink's ending always annoyed me.
"I believed in you, always believed in you. You just didn't believe in me"

What?? Yes she did actually Blane! You dumped her because you were a coward. But still, young Andrew McCarthy...Grin

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Quiet Man, Gone With the Wind, The Godfather, The Odessa File, The Great Escape, West Side Story.

SirSamuelVimes · 07/02/2021 18:28

Oh I loved Seven Brides for Seven Brothers! I'd forgotten all about it.

OohKittens · 07/02/2021 18:33

I was practically brought up by my nan, we would watch the same films on rotation. How green was my valley, the quiet man and grand slam.

For 80s films nothing beats the princess bride I watch it every week Blush another good one is wizard. Also frog dreaming.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 07/02/2021 18:35

You can't beat the Ealing comedies.
The Ladykillers
Passport to Pimlico
The Man in the White Suit
Genevieve

But also
The King and I
Roman Holiday

Princess Bride is great, all the kids loved that one!!
I had the biggest crush on Wesley.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, I haven't heard of some of these so I'm really looking forward to seeing some new ones! Perfect for curling up on a rainy afternoon with popcorn.

Paper Moon, The Champ, The Way We Were ans Love Story will make you sob like you never believed possible.

@ancientgran

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Quiet Man, Gone With the Wind, The Godfather, The Odessa File, The Great Escape, West Side Story.
Just realised my taste doesn't really run to music, comedy and dancing generally. I suppose West Side Story would be the best fit.
DianaT1969 · 07/02/2021 19:02

Not quite as old, but Pillow Talk with Rock Hudson and Doris Day. Calamity Jane too.

orangejuicer · 07/02/2021 19:04

Another one for Seven brides for seven brothers if you can ignore certain moralities.

Calamity Jane?

Imissthegym · 07/02/2021 19:09

She will find Seven Brides for Seven Brothers interesting! It’s such a sexist film. Lovely songs though. And Howard Keel is very handsome.

My fair lady
Goodnight mister tom
The quiet man

DPotter · 07/02/2021 19:38

Brigadoon - haven't seen that one in years!

Bridge over the River Kwai - another good war one

Sometimesonly · 07/02/2021 19:55

It’s such a sexist film.
Well Adam's idea is based on the rape of the Sabine women but it doesn't work out well for him, does it? I think it's clear that Milly always has the upper hand!

Am I the only person who couldn't stand The Princess Bride?!
