How gruesome is it? Really want to watch it but I really don't like gratuitous violence

@xsquared good idea! I watched that a while ago really liked it too. Fascinating concept!

Sunny4876 · 09/07/2021 15:57

Biggest waste of 3 hours in a cinema I've ever experienced.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 09/07/2021 21:49

Pelle definitely targeted Dani for the cult and for himself.

Having done probably more than my share of psychedelics in the 90s, this film put me off ever even thinking of touching them again Grin.

I was given diazepam a couple of years ago, a high dose, and it induced a bad trip (thankfully I realised it was just that). This film was just like that fucking diazepam.

Karmagoat · 09/07/2021 22:20

I enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good as Hereditary which I loved and think is one of the best horror films to come out in a long time

FindingMeno · 09/07/2021 22:23

Great film.
Must watch it again!

LightAsTheBreeze · 10/07/2021 08:15

I see Hereditary is on Netflix, will watch!

SmugglersHaunt · 10/07/2021 08:22

I found it incredibly boring. It went on forever and there was virtually no story. It wasn’t even that gory or scary either! Watch The Wicker Man if you’ve not seen it - much better

Immunetypegoblin · 14/07/2021 09:29

I'm actually rewatching it and enjoying all the subtle details... Like just how shit a person Christian really is. He forgot Dani's birthday, he forgot how long they had been together, he deliberately didn't tell her his plans and then got arsey/offended when she said this was kind of shitty, he set up his friends so they had no real option but to go 'Umm, ok' when it turned out he had asked Dani to come to Sweden... God he's crap!

Flaxmeadow · 14/07/2021 09:32

I'd describe it as more dark than gory. Its great film

Supersimkin2 · 14/07/2021 09:44

I loved it. So beautiful - all takes place in a super-pretty ‘inspirational Scandi living’ lifestyle shoot - and so savage.

I thought Christian did a great job of being hopeless. I loved the trippy flowers 🌸.

juliainthedeepwater · 14/07/2021 09:46

I think it is probably ultimately a bit style over substance... but saying that, the style is so stunning it's definitely worth watching. Some scenes have stayed with me a long time, too. Hmm, making me doubt my first point now Grin

WoSarah · 14/07/2021 11:13

I really like this movie

LeonardLikesThisPost · 14/07/2021 11:31

I think it's one of the most unsettling films I've watched.

Creeping tension, unease, unease, moment of sheer horror, more unease, then outright horror.

Made me feel a bit trapped and anxious. Definitely well done and memorable, but not one I'd want to watch again.

Think I'll give Hereditary a go next day off.

SirenSays · 14/07/2021 13:07

I really really wanted to like it, but it just felt flat. Dani was a weak protagonist who just suffered through the movie, with no real character developments until the last 30 minutes or so. It was impossible not to feel sorry for her but it didn't make her particularly likeable imo.
I get that Ari Aster leans into certain tropes and didn't try to make us root for the men, but when the men go missing, I'm left wondering why I'm supposed to care.

I liked the visuals, it's very refreshing to have a horror movie that isn't so dark. The ending is especially beautiful. But I felt the scandi plot was badly researched and rushed.

I did like it better than Hereditary, which despite trying several times I still haven't been able to finish.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 21/07/2021 21:22

Not a fan either. I thought it was weak
No idea why gore is considered essential in horror films ( aside from it being horrible). Somewhere in the world is someone in real life having vile things done to them. It’s reality not scary in the genre sense.

My idea of a good horror film is something like The Ring. Yes the girl with long hair is scary but the red acer tree and the fly on the film are really disturbing.

seasonalremarks · 22/07/2021 22:00

I wanted some of them to escape - or try to!

It fell a bit flat for me and was too predictable. Christian would have hatched a plan for their escape the night before. I hated it actually. It started out really well but fell flat and was ridiculously predictable.

Etinox · 23/07/2021 08:01

I really enjoyed it, for the Scandiness and interesting relationship- he was a such a tool. I normally avoid horror movies as they’re unsettling but this was quite straight. No supernatural, just people doing bad/ stupid things.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 23/07/2021 08:23

I rewatched it the other day and liked it more the second time. There were a good few subtle details that I had missed the first time.

Flavabobble · 25/07/2021 00:08

I love how it looks, the filming style, the lighting, the white clothing etc. But by God it's a dull film. I started watching it a couple of weeks ago, and could only manage about half an hour at a time.
I feel like I should really sympathise with the main character but feel guilty as I found her supremely annoying and felt sorry for Christian - he was too wet to finish with her, but it would've been for the best.

BrokeBaroness · 25/07/2021 00:29

It's really good. Bit of gore, terrible sense of foreboding and it will stay with you! Really well done.

Bryonyshcmyony · 25/07/2021 00:33

Agree
AuntMasha · 25/07/2021 02:48

I remember when it was first released, one film critic described it as more of a break-up movie than a horror.

oopsyydaisyy · 02/08/2021 01:24

horrible movie, i thought it was more comedy Confused
what a waste of my evening Hmm

Anon778833 · 17/08/2021 09:05

I really liked this. It's definitely not gratuitous at all. It's very clever actually because the initial storyline foreshadows what happens later. It's mainly about the lead female character and how she finds a family that empathises with her truly (her boyfriend is dismissive of her all the way through pretty much).
